Add me to the "Too Thin" list. All the internals of the motor were designed for heavier viscosity than any of the "0" oils on the market today. Current model engines have different clearances, and the big push is for very low drag oils for fuel economy.
Where Neil lives in Canada has very similar weather to yours, I would consider his advice Gospel.

They should have ran the engine when it was not cold so new oil was already circulated.

Welcome on board, Fox ! And welcome to my twin sister 850 Blue eyes... !SesMoge wrote: ↑20 Aug 2021, 15:21 IMG_20210804_171727743~3.jpg
Hello mates, nice to meet you.
While my main Volvo is an S70, I recently acquired an 850 awd model, 1997 year as well.
The dealership has been helpful in getting parts like timing belt and accessories. (poor 850 has been sitting for a few years, almost turned into a rwd car by the previous owner) When the dealership gave me 0w-20 engine oil however... I thought that oil is way too thin for this B5254T engine?
(owners manual is lost, temperatures stay withing freezing and 20° Celsius year round, coastal area, lots of small city driving, usually)
Meanwhile I went ahead and got a 10L jug with 5w40 Biltema full synthetic. (as recommended by entering the 850 licence plate number on their website)
Ever since I put Biltema 10w40 semi-synthetic in my S70 B5202S, the engine has been as smooth as never before. Less smoke from the exhaust even.
My gut tells me to go with the biltema 5w40 for the 850 awd. I think the dealership is too obsessed with those new cars these days. I think those new 2019 S60 R-design use 0w20.
Cheers!

I wrote "engine +oil" in the engine search, and not less than 1 104 pages... Apparently, there is debate....

"Mineral oil" ?!? I wonder what that means, exactly.
Given the amount of ether shoved down the poor things' throat, I'm guessing it wasn't in tip-top tune.
Really like the safety first raised platform - for video purposes only, da?

Here is a link to a pdf file for the owner's manual, I didn't find one in François.

I have used 0w40 in my s70 for 15years, it has not a single leak and there is no hydro tappet rattling. Of course, if the engine already has some wear or slight leaks it might not be the best choice.
It is surely not necessary, but I do not think it does any harm.
Just put in what you want, I think it will be safe if it meets the temp range in the manual. Don't forget oils have improved a lot in the last 20+ years.
