2000 V70 2.4T 50-42LE issues

Post by micheale »

Hi everyone,

My 2000 V70 2.4T is having issues with the 50-42LE transmission, up until last week it was working flawlessly but I am now having an issue that when I am stopped in Drive the car is staying in first gear and I have to use the brakes a lot more as the car is fighting trying to pull off, this also causes a lot of vibration throughout the car and the RPM drops to roughly 6-650RPM. In my head I think this points to a torque converter / lockup solenoid issue but the car is not throwing any codes at all and still drives perfectly once moving, either at motorway speeds or around town. The fluid is recently changed, still red in colour and at the correct level when cold and hot.

The only change I made to the car recently was replacing the brake calipers as the stock ones had seized, could this be ABS related if the bleed wasn't quite perfect?

I am very mechanically minded but this one has me stumped, without it throwing a code I don't want to throw parts at it without having an idea where to start. I am hoping it is not a terminal transmission issue!

I'm only the second owner of the car so I am trying to bring it back to health.

A few people have told me this issue is related to the ABS module starting to fail so that’s giving me somewhere to start.

Welcome to MVS!

When was the transmission oil last changed? If it had it has recently had the oil changed, who did it and how did they change the oil? These transmissions are generally robust, but if they have issues it is mostly due to lack on maintenance or someone using a pressure cleaning oil change process, or finally, using the wrong oil.

With an automatic transmission, when in drive and you are stopped obviously you know you have to keep your foot on the brakes. If you are saying you are doing this and the car is still creeping forward, what is the brake pedal pressure like? Is the peddle pressure normal, soft/spongy or hard to push?

The previous owner was a police officer who kept the car after he retired, it wasn’t a pursuit car but was used by a detective instead. It had a full Volvo service history up until late 2019.

I did a drain and fill last year then last weekend I did a flush by taking the cooler line off of the radiator, I did the flush to see if it would help with the issue.

Before this issue started the car would creep in traffic like a normal automatic, now I’m having the apply substantially more pedal pressure and instead of creeping it will pick up speed very quickly.

Sounds more like you have a brake issue. If you did not bleed out all the air when you worked on the calipers that could be the reason. Can you even stop correctly, does the abs activate when you slam the bakes (obviously try this only if safely possible).

The Transmission is always in gear when stopped and in D. So that should be ok, not sure about the added vibration and low rpm? Maybe another unrelated issue?

The car stops fine, I’m having to apply more brake pressure to overcome the drive from the gearbox. I’ll test an emergency stop tonight and see if the ABS activates and will report back.

I meant that more as in if the brakes even have enough force to get abs to activate (to lock the wheels)? pretty sure ABS will work if that is the case.
As scot850 already mentioned, how is the pedal feel? If there is any doubt I would bleed them again to be sure that there is no air left and that can be excluded as the cause. In any case please be very careful and if there is any doubt that the brakes work perfectly have a shop check it even if just to be sure.
