2000 V70 n/a need help with manual swap

Post by Cole343 »

Hello! My names Cole. A year ago I bought my very first car. It’s a 2000 V70 n/a. I’ve had so much fun with it. But unfortunately I blew my CV’s back in august. I figured it was the perfect opportunity to manual swap my V70. ( considering brand new CV’s are very expensive). I ended up buying a parts car. A 98 T5 S70. The engine was blown but the transmission and all of its components were perfect. Even the interior and body of the car were perfect. To cut the story short, I got the transmission out, bought a brand new flywheel and clutch off IPD ( which is very expensive surprisingly. Cost me roughly $700).
I got the transmission, shifter, clutch pedal, etc. I followed another forum on a guy manual swapping his 98 n/a 850. I ended up taking the TCU out just as he shown. When it came to starting the car, some wires had to be split and rewired, to even get the car to start. Which was shown in the 850 owners forum as well. The idling was rough on first start up. But I wasn’t surprised, it always is on a cold start. On the first test drive, the clutch worked perfectly but I did find out I was in limp mode ( also not surprised). But the next day is when I found out some other bad issues. I soon figured out that the ECU needs to be reprogrammed.
See the issue I’m facing is that my speedometer and rpm gauge doesn’t work, my idling jumps from 900-1,500 rpm’s when idling ( I plugged in a OBDII reader to check my rpm’s) and My ABS and ETS light is shown on my dash. She’s also miss firing :( I replaced the gas pedal and that helped a little, but not that much to make a difference. I did some research on the throttle body to make sure that’s not the issue, so im currently rebuilding it. ( it’s very expensive to get your throttle body fixed on by a mechanic shop, I’d rather do it myself). The ABS light is caused by my rear break lines being kinked I believe, so I’m currently putting new ones in.
My biggest question is, does anybody reprogram N/A ECU’s??? I think it might being going crazy because it can’t read the auto trans anymore. Ive tried many places but they all only do work on T5’s or R’s. I even got rejected by Hilton. I know I shouldn’t be spending so much time and money in this thing considering it being N/A, but this was practice for me before I get my dream car ( 850R). I guess it wouldn’t be so hard if I knew anyone else who manual swapped a N/A v70.
Another question, would it be possible or even ethical to get a stand-alone ECU for it? Where would I even get a base tune for it? Any tips or suggestions please. I actually miss just driving to the store in my v70.
* I attached pictures of codes that I’m getting

UPDATE :D : I’ve read all your feedback and highly appreciate everyone one. Shortly right after this post, my Volvo mechanic said to try to throw my TCU back in. and it worked!! I’m very happy. Nothing seems to be a major issue, the throttle body rebuild was a success, My biggest concern currently after the manual swap is on a rare occasion, when rolling to a stop and putting the clutch in to go into neutral, it stalls and dies. Now my current idle in park is 900rpms. I’ve tried slowing down to 1,200 rpm’s right before the car stalls and that seems to do the trick. Another concern is, sometimes it takes multiple cranks to get it started. Third times the charm lol. Other than those issues, it drives and rides amazing. Definitely more fun. I’m going to check the spark plugs, even though I replaced those a year ago. And maybe try cleaning my injectors. I have feeling it has to do with my fuel.

Hello Cole!

One problem is your 2000 ECU is pinned to your VIN, and will look for the TCU and functions to drive the ETS.

After the holidays, reach out to yagger here ( link coming) about reprogramming your ECu

Rebuilding the ETm isn’t a good first project, how are you electronics skills!

The P0600 code is due to the TCM not being there. The wires you jumped on that connector should be the 4 CAN bus wires. I believe those are the same on the Denso ECU cars (1999-2000 NA). Info on that is here: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/15 ... fo/page/6/

As far as the crank position codes, what flywheel did you use? I would first ensure that the tone ring has the same amount of teeth. I believe the ME7 flywheel is the same as the Denso, but I can't confirm.

Now for the tune... that'll solve the P0600 code, but I'm not familiar with anybody who tunes the Denso ECUs. I would reach out to ScottishBrick over on Swedespeed. He may know of someone who can handle that. Another option could be to find a '99-'00 ECU for an NA manual car, however that will be a little challenging to find, and it would have to be reprogrammed to your car. I'm not sure if it's as simple as a VIDA software download or if it would need to be cloned... in which case, it's not going to be of any use.
Standalone is an option, but I'm sure SOMEONE out there could tune the Denso ECU. They would just need a stock manual tune for that particular ECU, I believe. Which would require one to be sourced anyway.

ETM repair... I would urge against that unless you're good with small electronic repair. I am not, and I failed miserably about 3 times in a row. Wasted like two ETMs. I suggest finding a good used one. Just keep in mind, it will need to be for a 1999-2001 NA. Transmission does not matter. Yellow label is good, NEW white label is better. This (https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/upgr ... rs.592059/) is what it looks like, no Magneti Marelli logo. This isn't the correct part number for your car though.

What exact wiring did you do for the swap? Like clutch switch wise and canbus related things. I can’t find much information for denso cars on the forums. I just don’t want to assume it’s the same wiring job as a Bosch ecu set up.

Do you have the ECM wiring diagrams? Compare them, the CAN bus wiring may be the same (but I'm not 100% sure).

The Denso diagram pages for the ECM are 17 and 106. The clutch sensor is 7/123 on the diagram. I see you have an S80, so it may be slightly different, but I couldn't say for sure.
