I have just purchased an 04, V70 wagon. It is a non turbo, 2 wheel drive, w/approx 138K miles. All the issues seem to be minor but I want things to be right. The key FOB works but the key just swings loose in the FOB. Is there an easy fix for this?

The car is quite dirty inside which will only requires elbow grease, and there is a section of the drivers seat back that needs to be restitched.

2004 V70 would be the switchblade key. You can get replacement Shell Cases. Just transfer the blade, electronics and the RFDI transponder which is the little glass capsule in the head part of the case. Be careful taking out and inserting the RFDI transponder. You can crack the glass, so work it, not force it. The hardest part is getting the spring back in.

Fellow newbie here too. When I first got my 02 S60 it had a stitch on the drivers seat that let loose too. Local upholstery shop fixed me up while I waited...not perfect but did a good job.

Can you name the shop? I might get some stitching done, just knowing a decent shop nearby helps.

It was a place in Urbandale, IA next to Blackford Shoe Repair. Pretty sure this was a furniture place...I see there is an alterations place next door that does leather jackets, maybe give them a try can't recall if that was it: Geysa's Tailors & Boutique

Sorry to sidetrack your thread Steve!

https://andrewpeng.net/cars/2006-volvo- ... key-repair

This is a great guide for repairing your key. I used LePage All Plastics Super Glue to glue mine back up once I confirmed it was working correctly. Replacement switchblade end on eBay is under $5. I used a dentist's pick to gently chisel/pry my transponder out of my fob. It worked great. But if you break it and don't have a backup, I've heard exorbitantly high quotations for replacing a key (I believe it has to be shipped from Sweden IIRC)

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Its a $500 experience to make one of those chipped FOB keys for a Volvo Both the new key and the car have to be physically present at Volvo to enable the key to start the car, in short.

If you want a replacement key you may want to call around for quotes from locksmiths. There is an independent guy here in town that does some of the chip fobs for a fraction of the dealer price, and they work well. Even comes to your door.

As long as you move the RF chip, from the fob to the new fob ( careful) this can work.

Locksmiths cannot program new fobs. Volvos security programming is extremely robust , perhaps best in industry.
