Does my 96 850 have a light in the trunk?

Post by 454cid »

I'll admit, I haven't looked for it.... every time I think of it, it's dark and can't see. I don't know if it's not there, or if the bulb is simply burned out. I did do a forum search, for "trunk light" but was getting hits for light beige, and trunk struts.

I was thinking of getting an LED replacement bulb, if it's just burned out.

I see Rockauto lists bulbs.... did some 850's get trunk lights and some not?

I looked in the manual, and 850's did get trunk lights... except mine. I went out and looked around with a flash light, and I don't see one.

Is there a pigtail tucked in someplace, where I could buy one, and plug it in?

Mine is far away from me for a couple more days or I'd snap a pic. If the light's no longer there the pigtail will be. All 854 (850 sedans) came with trunk lights AFAIK. It's like between the speakers, easy to reach in the center of the trunk.

I went outside this morning, and looked again. What I see is a black connector sticking out of the steel structure. It looks like maybe I'm missing more than just the light. The light I see online (ebay and Ipd) would not be oriented correctly if plugged directly into the connector on the car. It would also have exposed electrical contacts on the backside.

There is nothing covering the underside of the package tray, I can see the backside of the speakers, and bare (painted) steel structure.

Found it.... after looking at Volvo diagrams for awhile, I was still not seeing the detail, I was looking for. I went out once again, and looked. The black connector, I saw earlier was actually one of two, and not electrical.

The light is further back under the package tray than I expected, and I found the switch turned off, and covered with thick clear tape.... like packaging tape, but much thicker than the stuff I've purchased. I peeled it off, and turned the switch on, and it works.

I shut the trunk, and open the arm rest in the backseat to verify the light was off with the trunk closed, and it was. I'll continue to verify the light turning off for a bit. I can't imagine why someone would tape the switch in the off position, unless it was coming on randomly and draining the battery.

Just leave the armrest open and a window down.
No more litter box odor from the trunk and
the unobserved cat is free to run off and be
unobserved elsewhere - Until feeding time.
