Is there a factory service manual?

Post by 454cid »

I've seen various pdfs online, and they seem very abbreviated. I'm looking for solid torque information, and these so called "manuals" I've seen online are not consistent..... I see 18lbft for the idler pulley and tensioner lots of places. The manual seems to call out 30ftlbs for the tensioner, and I've found one spec for the water pump 15 INCH-lbs or 20NM.....those are not equivalent!

I've looked on ebay for physical manuals, and all I see are booklet size publications on very specific subjects like the SRS system, or schematics.

For most of the cars I've had, I've gotten a thorough book ( or set of a couple books), but I'm not finding anything near that level of completeness for the 850.

Does Volvo not have real service manuals? I keep seeing "Courtesy of Volvo Cars of North America", which sounds like the manuals I'm finding are made by another company.... Why would a company site itself as a source?

One of the biggest reasons I refer to service manuals is for torque values. I almost always use a torque wrench, and that's especially important for aluminum. "German Tight" would be really bad for me with aluminum. I'm used to iron and steel.

That particular page I've seen before, but not on that website. I still can't make heads or tails of the torque specs. They're not being clear on which bolts are which. They don't address the idler at all, and they don't differentiate between the various bolts of the tensioner...There are four of them! The pivot, the bolt that holds the pulley on, and the two in the hydraulic ram. I've read quite a few timing belt threads now, and I don't recall anyone saying that they tightened anything down to 30lbft.

The Volvo publications are the go-to BUT they are also well known to be riddled with typos. Nothing we can do about that now. And many of those errors propagate across the internet.

Agreed with above. The Haynes manual is still one of the most useful. There is a Chilton manual that has some information and photos but it's not as good as the Haynes in general.

The Haynes manual includes torque specifications for a majority of work done by a DIY user. I did my first timing belt job on my 2000 V70 thanks to the Haynes, torquing everything to spec, supplemented with pointers and tricks from the forum threads.

Each chapter focuses on a specific section of the car (ie: automatic transmission, engine in-car work). Each chapter begins with a table of torque values for bolts described therein. Though my V70 Haynes has torques for detailed engine inner workings, it didn't have torques for bumper brackets, so some things get missed.

AllData DIY also has torque values. You have to pay monthly, it's harder to navigate, and is much less descriptive than the Haynes manual.

The 1998-2000 S/V/C70 Haynes manual was only available in the UK so it too me some effort to track it down. Hopefully the 850 one has a USA counterpart. You might have to find a UK version if no USA one exists.

Yes, there are US and UK versions of the 850 manual. I have both and they're almost identical. The UK version is hardcover and the US version is softcover. The UK version lists torque values in Nm and the US version in ft-lbs, as you might expect.

I guess I'll go ahead on buy a Haynes manual, then. I've got one for my truck and never use it. Every time I try to use it, I find the proper section, and just when it getting to the part I need to know it says something about the procedure being beyond the scope of this manual. The GM manual is four books, and it about 8" thick if stacked together.... not that it's perfect. The pictures are terrible, and the editors know editing (I assume), not vehicles.

I think the Haynes is the best choice for a printed manual that I've come across for the 850. It definitely has gaps and does not go into great detail for many steps. I generally rely on MVS as a main source for details on tools, parts and procedure. YouTube videos and other websites are helpful too (there used to be a "Bay 13" on another discussion board that had well written and photographed procedures for many common jobs). Haynes would be a #3 source.
