The Volvo will continue to appreciate and be more exotic as time goes on while the Lexus will just be a forgotten foreign nice (I didn't say rice  I can say that though I'm Asian  ) but wannabe muscle car. The circle of owners is different also unlike Volvo lifers. Can see older and more mature with the Volvo but not older boys with a need to smoke tires. Again, Volvo For Life, of you.

Lexus IS350? LS,GS,LX,ES etc...

Yeah that is a concern haha. I am a dad in my 30s, not into roasting tires anymore. Gotta give the Lexus some credit though it is a wonderful car to drive. But I do feel a bit juvenile at times....I hear you on the community too, I much prefer the Volvo gang.
Thanks for the insight.

My sister in law passed down her 98 LX470 with over 325K miles and it was great. I helped them with it from time to time but they kept it in excellent condition. My other brother wanted it for snow so we traded with other sister in laws 03 GS300.

We just gave away the 03 GS300 to a friend's sister after 5 years of ownership with 188K on the clock. Wife and Son both liked the car but the need was there. Was able to track down all the issues and repair besides being the best year according to Lexus Mech. The older models were truly well and overbuilt.

Tough call but for sure the Volvo in that condition will pay you back in the long run. Won't feel juvenile owning it either .

Lastly, Lexus it's about the owner whereas Volvo it' about the car. Owner plays second fiddle.

Sure. Traded my first car, a 1970 Ford Torino GT with 302 V8, for a Chevrolet Biscayne 4 door with 250 Turbo Thrift 6. The Torino would now be a classic with unique fast back design. Only 60,000 were built.

I'd think about:
1. Which will be cheaper to own
2. Which would be tougher to replace if you regretted selling
3. (Most importantly) Which you will enjoy driving more.

This is a tricky decision. As a father, you need a more spacious vehicle for hauling around kids and everything they need, so the wagon wins in that respect.

The Lexus is 10 years younger, so parts will be available longer and age-related problems are a decade further off than the Volvo. I don't know Lexus but I trust Toyota as being reliable, so it might be comparable with the Volvo there. Perhaps it matters how long you want to keep the car and how much time you can spend maintaining it (as a father, not much?). The Volvo may lose there being 10 years older.

Sounds like you prefer performance. Have you made both cars roughly equal in that respect? With the Volvo, you're getting more cargo space and drawing far less attention to yourself, but still retaining performance and fun for you as a driver. The Lexus is more likely to draw attention and get broken in to. Do you value showing your performance (Lexus) or keeping it a secret (a fast, sleeper Volvo)?

Of course I'm voting for the Volvo because it's old, boxy, wagon, practical, sleeper, and sort of a joke until it smokes the guy next to you. I'd recommend keeping it as your daily for now, then eventually adding a newer, more practical car as your daily and keeping the Volvo as fun car. Both the Volvo and Lexus are fun, but the Volvo is more useful because it's a wagon.

I really appreciate the breakdown. Definitely some good points.

Jury is still out on this one!

Well, I accidentally hit a Lexus once and ripped the door off. The owner was so upset about what happened to his car he didn't even notice his arm had got caught and torn off too.

When I pointed it out,and stopped the bleeding, he said ''stop - wheres my Rolex?

(tough Lexus love on the Volvo forum)

That's what the owner of a British repair $hop told me. Besides, it has a "Total Loss" Title, I ran a Carfax. Can see the rear end damage on the bumper and lopsided exhaust. Owner has a clean Title however. Won't have a great looking Jag sitting in the driveway .
