Windshield washer check valve?

Post by 454cid »

I have to run my washer pump longer than I'd expect to get any washer fluid on the windshield. I did find a video of a man replacing check valves, but they were directly under the nozzles and on a newer Volvo. I'm thinking there should be one closer to the pump so the line doesn't have to fill up on every use. Is there supposed to be one there from the factory? In the pump maybe?

Also, do 850's really spray two solid streams per side, or do I have partially plugged nozzles?

On my 98, the check valves are directly under the washer nozzles under the hood, there are 2.

Lol, thanks. It's mostly about what bothers me next

That, and this process is kinda fun.... although, I admit, I was a bit stressed over the timing belt.

I purchased the ProPart version of the newer washer nozzle. I just got them installed, which was very easy.... I just used a stout pair of needle nose pliers to remove the hoses, and then squeeze the plastic nubs and the original nozzles came right out.

Unfortunately, the new nozzles are a disappointment. I'm not sure if it's the part, or if it's a pressure issue. They don't have a nice spray pattern, and they don't hit far enough up the windshield. They "function", so I'll leave them in place for the moment, while I figure out what I want to do next.

I found that there is a check valve listed for my truck, and I'm planning on getting one for the 850. I'll mount it near the pump, so lines don't have to fill up each time I want to wash the windshield.

There has to be another check valve somewhere in the system nearer the spray nozzles. On my V70 '00 the water starts almost immediately.

There are 2 check valves near the headlights but those are for the headlight washers. Those are little diaphragm valves and the rubber diaphragm either splits or sticks open when it fails which also reduces the water pressure to you windshield as the water drains to the ground. If you are careful you can open the units and check if they are just dirty or blocked.

Wagons also have one near the RH hood hinge for the rear washer on the tailgate.

I though there was another one in the hood area for the front windshield.

I have not laid eyes on them, but I know there is supposed to be check valves near the nozzles I assume they're under the hood insulation. I don't really understand that placement as they would not prevent the long line from the pump from draining, which is what I think is happening to mine. My thought is that the pump itself may have a check valve internally that has failed.
