So I'm wondering if there is a significant amount of oil in the block that I should be accounting for with a fresh rebuild.
I put 6 qts in originally ( Amsoil Break in oil ) , and it seems a little low on the dipstick. Not too much, but maybe 1/2 qt.
Just being paranoid ? I should say that I had problems with the dipstick in the past ( broke the handle off ) so the handle has been re-glued on a couple of times.
Oil capacity of rebuilt engine Topic is solved

Same stick, tube. New O-ring. I had the stick and tube while block was in the shop.
Researching it more, it might be normal, at least according to a Google search for engines in general.. For what that's worth.
I'll top it off a little just to be safe.

The fill for the turbo motors is 6.1 qts.

On an oil change, I use 6.1 qts. They say 5.6 qts "without oil cooler" and the capacity of the cooler/lines is just under 1 qts (0.95 qts)
If everything is dry (as in the oil cooler, lines, etc was also drained) you're looking at closer to 6.5 qts to get to capacity.

So if there is some issue with the stick / tube, then I could put in 7 qts total, drain and then add 6 qts back. That should get me right. Then deal with the stick.

I wouldn't worry about the dipstick.
If things are dry, put in 6.5 qts. Let the car run for a couple minutes, then stop and recheck the oil level after it's sat for a few. That should show you your "full" level. Then after that, gauge your 6.1 qts fills at oil changes and see how they compare. If you have 6 qts in there now, just add a little more and let it ride. It's not going to hurt anything.
If it's a fresh engine rebuild, you're going to be draining it soon-ish anyway.
If you're one of those people who need to have it at the "MAX" line, I doubt extra little bit over 6.1 qts needed to reach that will cause much issue, however.
My '97 N motor is running a P2R oil pan/cooler and I needed to swap dipsticks, as the P2 one is longer. Before I swapped the dipstick, my 6.1 qts was only registering on the lower 3/8-1/2" of it. It still doesn't run at "MAX", but I'm not worried about it.

Yes I'll be doing the first drain @ 5oo miles. And I'm still running my catch can w/ filter, so it's not a closed system anyway.
Don't think a few ounces in that case could cause any problems.

My owner's manual says 5.6 quarts, and 6.1 quarts for "certain models" and to add .95 quarts to turbo models if the oil cooler has been drained.
I guess my NA 850 is "certain models" because I put about 6.5qts in it. The stick goes in at an angle, so one side is right at the max, and the other is slightly higher.
