Car misfires on cold start, new battery giving whining sound

It’s more often the PEM than the pump. A junkyard PEM is an easy swap in if he can use a basic tool set

Thanks. I have them saving both the old PEM and pump. To their credit they did check the junkyard for a PEM but couldn't come up with one. Fingers still crossed that they don't come back and tell me it's the fuel pressure sensor!!!

I’ve got a spare PEM here in Albany. The Buffalo shop needs to learn about Erie VoVo in Utica, too. They have massive inventory of all things Volvo

Not sure whether to blame the car or the auto shop...the nightmare continues; Pep Boys in Buffalo put in a new fuel pump and a new PEM. The car still won't start! The original code were 300, 304,305,306, 087 and 628. They are now thinking its the ECM! But they are gonna call their Tech Support to figure it out.

Anyone know a good Volvo shop in Buffalo, NY? I've lost confidence in this shop.

The misfire codes aren’t too useful if the car won’t start. The other two codes point to wiring problems to the fuel pump or voltage delivery problems, which then results in low fuel pressure. Probably inspection of the wiring to the pump and the PEM would be the next step. I’ll check my Buffalo friends for a good Volvo shop, there’s an excellent one in Ithaca but that’s three hours away

Wow, that would be great. To their credit Pep Boys said they's eat some of the work costs if I decide to have it towed to another shop.

They did talk about fluctuating voltages and maybe troubleshooting wires, this was after suggesting a new ECM. They didn't mention any new codes but maybe you don't get any if the car doesn't start? They also don't have a Volvo specific diagnostics scanner and thought a shop with one might be better able to isolate the problem. Apparently there is a Volvo dealer 30 miles from Lacawanna (near Buffalo).

I've read some threads on Matthew's talking about kinked pump lines and faulty replacement PEMs. Also, recently my son had a remote starter installed....any chance this could muck things up . Spitballing here.

Ouch. That very likely may be the cause.

On the ECU, these cars pin the ECU to the VIN , you cannot swap them like the -1998 Volvos. You need an active line to the Volvo server to load the software or the ability to flash ECU correctly.

North town dealer is at Main and Transit.

Getting messy! The Buffalo Volvo dealer, North Town Volvo (Williamsville), didn't want to service my old Volvo. So had to have car towed to different shop that handles imports.

Regarding voltages, Pep Boys did say that with new PEM and Pump they were only getting 8 volts to pump and no fuel to rail. At this point we thought a Volvo specialist would be wise, however I didn't anticipate that the specialist, North Town couldn't be bothered. Fingers crossed (so stressed), my son loves this car.

So this problem is resolved! United Auto Imports near Buffalo found a bad ground connection right away! Since I hijacked this thread (sorry), I'll re-post my experience in a new topic so it might be useful to someone.
