Need advice on 98 V70 NA M56 selling price

Post by Mike98 »

I don’t have time to maintain 3 Volvos and am planning to sell one of my 1998 V70 NA M56 manual trans cars. Car is located near Charlottesville, VA. I am the second owner, purchased the car in 2013 with 114,000 mi and it now has 196,000 mi. The car is white with no sunroof, it has Cold Weather Package (TRACS and heated fabric seats) and Volvo 15 inch Alloy wheels with Michelin Defender tires purchased in 2019.

Could MVS P80 enthusiasts help me determine a reasonable price range for the sale ? I hope the car will go to someone who appreciates P80s and is looking for a non-turbo with M56. Mostly I want to keep it out of a junkyard because it is fun to drive. Does the fact that it has a manual trans make it a vehicle that P80 enthusiasts would be interested in ?

Here are some details:

1. New Virginia state inspection in January, 2022, expires January 2023

2. Parts replaced in 2018 at 166,000 miles: Timing belt/tensioner/idler, water pump, serpentine belt/tensioner/idler, radiator, all radiator and heater hoses, coolant expansion tank.

3. Other parts replaced in last 3 years: top engine torque mount, right bottom engine mount, fuel pump, fuel filter, cam position sensor, both drive axles (rebuilt using original Volvo shafts and new CV joints), right rear bearing hub. Parking brake shoes and cables plus left rear hub were replaced in 2014.

4. All illumination lamps in SC813 radio have been replaced with LEDs

Items a purchaser should know about:

1. Air Conditioning works but has slow leak that has required 8-12 oz of freon each summer.

2. Fabric seats, both front seat bottoms have separated seams.

3. Like many P80 Volvos, the headliner sagged. It is tacked up with small stainless screws and washers.

4. Heater core was replaced in 2013, it may be time for another one. Drivers floorboard carpet has some dampness although it may be from recent snow tracked into the car.

5. The clutch is OK but doesnt engage as crisply as my other 1998 V70 NA M56. Original clutch – may need replacement in the next 20K-50K miles.

6. Mesh on the exhaust manifold flex joint has unfastened at one end so I expect the joint or manifold will have to be replaced in the next year. 3 weeks ago the OBD system reported cat efficiency code PO422 for the first time ever. It may be due to a leak at the exhaust manifold flex joint. Or it could be the cat or oxygen sensors. The exhaust system and oxygen sensors are all original. I reset the code and it returned after 300 miles of driving.

Bonus: Sale will include a free 1999 S70 parts car with dead engine and no auto-trans. The parts car has good leather seats, good sheet metal and may have usable exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. A trailer would be needed to transport the parts car.

I would appreciate some Hi / Low estimates of the cars value.

Thanks,

Mike

Up here , $1500-2500 in that condition as long as it can pass inspection.

That’s a decent looking car and the tuners like the -1998

That would've been my guess, too, in NJ.

I did sell my brother's 1998 S70 MT over the summer for $1,900 with manual, non-heated seats. It wouldn't pass inspection in NY because of a sensor that would not read as ready no matter how much he drove it around.

P80 V70 NA auto trans cars sometimes appear on Craigslist for $800 - $2000 depending on condition.
Does the M56 add some value even though the clutch is original and mileage is close to 200K ?

Thanks,

Mike

Only if you find your fish. There will be many more looking for a good runner in the 1500-2000 range

MTs aren’t that rare, I have three in the driveway.

Thanks for the advice, I posted the car on Charlottesville, VA craigslist. There was a lot of interest and the car sold for my asking price of $1200.
