Firstly, thanks to the members here that have informed, encouraged and humored me during the ownership of the two Volvo wagons I've owned. We got both of them after they'd been well-used and paid the price of ownership afterward in dollars and sweat, for sure, and this site has remained a great resource.
That much said, some of you are going to rake me over the coals about giving up on my 2006 xc70, but there are many factors. Primarily, I don't have the space or time to treat this as a second car that I can work on getting back to A1 condition, I need a daily driver and this is no longer it.
I'd noticed over the past 18 months that I was losing oil somehow. Over that time, I've had to address other issues but the oil loss cause always seemed to elude the shop, so finally after I'd had an event where the engine was lurching about 1100 miles after an oil change and I discovered all the oil was gone, I bit the bullet and brought it to the dealership to get the official diagnosis. Their recommendation, which I'm sure is overkill but would certainly address the issues they were seeing, was to replace the engine. Baby, bathwater, toss it all. Their estimate was just south of $20K, which even their service advisor said was inadvisable.
The body is in great shape, just one scratch in paint of note, no rust below. Interior is aged but seats aren't torn, power and warming work flawlessly. There are some other issues I was planning to address but held off because of the oil loss problem (needs at least two new tires; there's a fuse/relay issue with the back doors; a couple of interior trim panels could be replaced) but otherwise this is in pretty good shape (new radiator, struts, headlight assemblies).
I've had no traction on FB Marletplace or Cars.com. I'd hate to have this scrapped. If there's a local Volvo shop that would restore and resell this, I have been unable to find it in the immediate area (Northeast Bronx/New Rochelle area). Any recommendations?

first, I'd get an unbiased diagnosys from someone who isn't trying to sell me a new car.
Used engines , from what I've seen are $1000 and up from erie volvo.

Is it currently running? Jonesg is on point. It’s a free scrap car unless you can define the project scope.
All done as a runner it is a $3500 car on the marketplace so that limits the market to retired free labor people.

Odometer is at 223,444.
Believe me, I've had the discussions about the merits vs. cost of having someone dig in there to find the problem, or swapping the engine. I also know I'm giving someone a car in mostly good shape, but as I'd said, I don't have the space or time to hang onto this until I ferret out the root cause. Thanks for your time.

Rule 1 is never ask MVS about getting rid of your Volvo
I did once a couple of years ago and was met with responses telling me to buy an even older vehicle
I would say the best way to profit from your predicament would be to part it out and then eventually scrap it. Just my two pence.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I have a buddy in the same position. The 06 S60 needs the head removed, repaired and refitted. The cost is going to be close to what the value of the car is in running condition. So the call is his to make. I have suggested selling it as a mechanics special. Up here the junkyards, when pushes would give around $1200 CDN. Other options is gifting it as a donation to the kidney-car-line and getting a donation receipt.
I was shocked at the price and all the gaskets needed for this repair. I hope to spend a few minutes with my ex-Volvo mechanic friend with parts lists and a P2 in front of us getting him to run through the steps he takes to do this head job and minimize the parts list needed for the repair. Just got confirmation from Victor Reinz that their head gasket is a multi-layered steel item, so I can drop the OE gasket from the list saving about $90 CDN from the list. That is still around $1200 CDN for parts, $2-300 for head repairs, and my buddy gets paid for his work so about $5-600 on top of that. So not cheap. I was offered a 50k mile engine from a specialist breaker but that was about $2600 CDN delivered, but then with the labor being about same for the swap it would make the car about the same or more than it is worth as a running car. I have spent hours identifying what I think is needed for repair, but at the end of all that I will have a good master list for parts needed and will share that here, and having 2 P2's the time is not wasted in my opinion. My buddy will have solid facts to work from to make a good financial decision on what way to go.
In your position, I would pass the car on as a mechanics special or donate it and not look back. Yes, I hate scrapping cars, but there is a point where this unfortunately becomes the only sensible option. Shed a few tears and move on!
Good Luck!
Neil.
