Rear Main Seal Mating Surface Damage

Post by shayinok »

We are currently converting the S70 from an automatic to a manual transmission. I've had a small oil leak for a few months, but as I had the rear main done a few years ago and have kept up with the PCV, we really didn't think that was the source. However, during the swap, we need to change the rear main seal anyway, but after we got everything apart, we found what looks like gouges from when we had the rear main seal done previously and an obvious leak. There are a few spots where the metal is pushing into the seal. Any thoughts on what to do about them other than maybe carefully smooth them out?

Carefully smooth out with a file and put a dab of RTV or gasket sealer / maker in those areas, and I would think you'll be good to go.
