1993 rotor removal

Post by potroast »

I am going to replace my front rotors on my 1993 854... I have removed the wheels, wheel-locating-bolt, calipers, and caliper mounts. What else must be removed to get my rotors off? I have tried removing them but they feel welded on. They are VERY solidly attached to the hubs. Is there something I'm missing?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

They rust on... you need a rubber mallet or steel mallet with a wood block between the hammer and rotor.

Ah, hold on! Memory tells me there's also a small hex(?) holding them on... thinking back...

Yes, the haynes manual references a small hex, but I have no clue where it is, and the manual doesn't have a pic... I feel so stupid for not being able to get it off, but the only reason I didn't use a mallet because I had this suspicion something else was there.

any ideas?

RUST..... it's what holds the rotor to the hub. I just got done R&R-ing the front rotors on my '99 S70 and had the same problem. The fit of the rotor to the hub is *very* precise and it doesn't take much rust to wedge it to the hub. Go to your local FLAPS (Friendly Neighborhood Auto Parts Store) and get this stuff called "PB Blaster"; this stuff is emensely better than WD40 for loosening rusted stuff. The drawback is that it stinks a bit. Give the hubs a good shot of this stuff and go have lunch. Come back, get a plastic mallet or rubber hammer, and start wanging away on the rotor.... it should free itself.

The front caliper brackets on my 854 T-5 are held on by two 7mm hex nuts. These are the brackets you have to remove to get the rotors off. I didn't have a 7mm hex driver, but I did have a 7mm hex key that I was able to insert and then turn with a wrench. Your 850 may be similar.

Potroast is correct; those rotors are probably welded on with rust, just like mine were. I used WD-40, waited a while, then wailed away on the rotors with a rubber mallet until they popped free. I'm not familiar with "PB Blaster", so I can't comment on it, but WD-40 worked fine in my case.
