I’ve a lovely C70 which has been parked in the garage for a couple of years. Decided to dig it out a couple of months back and not surprisingly, the battery was stone flat. Put a new one in but the engine made one positive ‘click’ then nothing. A visit from the breakdown folk gave a diagnosis of ‘stuck starter’. They whacked it a few times then left. I’ve bought another starter for it, but fitting looks really awkward and I’m not convinced of their diagnosis. Could it be a solenoid, or immobiliser or something like that? Keys still operate the central locking so key battery is ok

Is it still clicking when you try to start it? If it is, wack the Starter and Solenoid with a Rubber Mallet not a Hammer. Probably just binded by contaminants from sitting for years. If you get it broke loose you should not need another starter.

Hack for stuck starters when the Solenoid is clicking.

(1) Get a helper and give them these instructions: When I say GO!, turn the key to start and hold it until it starts or I yell stop.
(2) Get yourself in position with a Large Rubber Mallet. Cock your Arm.
(3) Yell GO!, as soon as you hear the Solenoid click, start whacking it hard and fast with the Rubber Mallet. If it does not turn over by the 5th wack yell STOP! .

This puts force on the Solenoid and Starter. motivates then to move when you wack it.
