DIY: P2 S60, V70 2.5T Washer Fluid Reservoir and Washer Pump Info"

Not sure this helps anyone but I ordered the "wrong" washer reservoir.

My car has intensive washer feature for the HL lens, but I ordered the standard reservoir.
The P.O. probably used "summer juice" so the intensive washer pump cracked open in half.

I was about to return the Washer Reservoir in exchange for the proper part.
As it turned out, I installed a standard reservoir (for models without intensive washer system) and
it works perfectly bc I don't want the intensive washer system anyway (wasting juice etc. etc. that I discussed
in this forum before).

So, for those who want to install the standard reservoir into a car that came with intensive washing system, you can.

You just have to decommission the intensive washing system: just unplug the intensive washing system and call it a day.

My sons' 06 XC70 headlight washers did not work, so removed the front bumper t access and it looked like an alien movie explosion where the alien came out the stomach. Clearly it had had regular summer fluid in it and it froze and exploded. Since then we only run winter fluid in the cars!

This is the "Standard Reservoir" installation in a car that came with HL wash system...

- As mentioned above, I de-commissioned the HL wash system as shown.
- Factory washer pump + new rubber seal (genuine Volvo seal).
- Zip ties as shown.
- Glad I de-commissioned the HL wash system.

4 years ago the powersteering belt/pulley had rubbed a hole in my 03 Odyssey's coolant reservoir. Didn't put the tank back and left it sitting in the compartment . Not wanting to spend the money nor can't wait for the part I sanded the area, used de-greaser then thoroughly cleaned with 91% alcohol before using hot glue on it. Use the larger hot glue gun to provide a better bond as the plastic of the reservoir will cool the melted glue quicker.

Being it's an overflow coolant reservoir and like the window washer reservoir it is not under pressure whereas Volvo's coolant expansion tank is part of the pressurized system. Still holding coolant .

Imagine the surprise as coolant started to sling under the hood .

Actually, every P80 car came with a headlight washer system, '93-'00. The washer conduit is built into the the same circuit as the front windshield washer, running off the same pump. There are little nozzles mounted on the headlight wiper arm. When you pull the lever to squirt the front windshield, it squirts the headlights and activates the headlight wipers.

I disable it on my P80's, plug the fluid lines and remove the wipers, unplug the wiper motors. When/if convenient I remove the motors too. Not worth the hassle of upkeep, don't miss them. So far I have left them intact in the P2 cars but I suppose that could change when they start breaking.

The nice thing about the standard reservoir is:

- Since the HL washer pump itself was rusted and broken in half (you can find photos of this issue on the web), I don't have to use the broken end of the motor and the old rubber seal, just another source for leak.

- So if one needs to replace the reservoir and decides to get rid of the HL wash system, one may as well buy the standard reservoir.

My mistake of buying the "wrong" reservoir turned out to be perfect...

I took this photo from the web...

A rusted/broken HL washer pump looks like this.
Even if you decommission the HL wash system and use original reservoir, you need
to keep the broken end and rubber seal to seat it. Even so, the body of the washer pump
is broken off, so no guarantee that the broken end will stay in place with the rubber seal.

A trick: tape the broken ends together, this way the body (which clips into the lower part
of the reservoir) stays to hold the broken end in place...

Is the HL pump somehow more prone to failure than any other washer fluid pump?
