Thanks Erik. The guy has both a 95 parts car and the 96 base model. From your info I might take a run to PnP in the morning as there are 3 possible candidates provided they have not been harvested already. Hopefully one is still there!
I might try removing the old one and cleaning it with MAF cleaner for giggles and the 2% chance it might get it going again lon enough for the new one to turn up!
Appreciate everyones advice on this.

Well the owner decided to pay for a new Volvo MAF (it was cheaper than NAPA and another local supplier of Bosch parts), however the difference is that the 2 other suppliers called back to say Bosch has none and no longer supply it!! I got a fairly hefty discount from Volvo (and could have got a bigger one if we could wait another 3-4 days more) but still have to wait 4-5 days for it due to the long weekend.
As it was cold and snowy this morning decided to go to PnP on the chance that all the MAF's had not been taken. Turned out none had been taken. I think at $53 after tax and the latest tax 'core charge' (on a MAF???) I think people are not willing to pay it. I took all 3 in the hope one might be good in the interim to get the car mobile.
I cleaned all the MAF's and will see if any make a difference. I am now concerned as the owner just added a new piece of info. 'I think my battery is flat............."! Weird as the car started and ran once the MAF was disconnected but would not run with it connected. I am now concerned that even a 98 may not run with a low voltage/current and the only issue is the battery.
Interestingly, communicating with the owner of the 96 850 NA (10 Valve) that is hoping I will take it on, says that it has a Siemans ECU and has the same MAF as the 95 10V. His 97 though has the later MAF, it is a 20V.
I hope to have time to try the other MAF's out incase any are bad to return to PnP, or if they are good I will keep them for anyone else that may need these rapidly disappearing parts!

New MAF needed. I believe the correct one is a Bosch #0280217107.
Noooooooooooo.
Running welll on lookup table usuallly means vacuum leak, not MAF
Check flow rate on scanner to see if it’s working
Doh!

Well, went down to my friends house today (cold and snowing of course) but fortunately the car is in a decent sized garage.
I was expecting to find I may have made a trigger happy decision on the fault in light of the 'battery might be low'.
Battery is lower than I like but fairly recent. First thing checked that. It was at 12.5V. Lower but ok for a -98.
Looked at the connector next. My heart nearly fell out. It was totally green and furry. I have never seen one like that. Heck I pulled 3 from a junk yard and all were oxidized but not green! Fortunately I brought contact cleaner and a brass brush. Cleaned it all out and blew out residue with an air can. It looked perfect as did the MAF pins. Re-connected the connector (Should have disconnected the battery to reset the fuel parameters). Got the owner to fire the car up. It turned over just fine and started a little rough and then ran fine and rev'd ok. Engine idled fine too. Suggested the owner take it for a run around the block. She backed it out and set off up the alley. Got about 30 yards and car died again. Disconnected the MAF and it fired right up and ran smooth.
Got the car back to the garage and disconnected the battery and pulled the MAF. Looked physically ok and clean. Cleaned it but due to lack of time decided to throw in one of the 3 cleaned units I got from PnP yesterday. Connected up, re-connected battery and the car fired up immediately and ran smooth, rev's fine. Got the owner to drive the car around the block and it ran perfectly. Then got her to continue around the neighbourhood and again it ran fine, she said it felt 'normal' and pulled well. So I have left the MAF in the car for now until the new one arrives. That way she can hopefully get a some use of the car in the meantime and I can get a good tested MAF out of it if it all continues to run ok.
I am not going to get too excited it is fixed yet as I have found this car is like my 'R' and likes to kick me in the butt the minute I think all is well!
If there is any change I will update this thread. Weird thing is this car just did a 600km round trip to Edmonton without any issues before this happened.

It's IAT sensor on 10v cars.scot850 wrote: ↑12 Apr 2022, 16:37 It was different. It is a Siemens part number I believe. Now maybe on a 96, but then if I pull that one the car won't move..........
Anyway this is the airbox from a 95 NA 10 valve:

Even I was surprised. I need to get the VIN# for the 96 to see if it up-changed. Did the software not change up then too?
