Mysterious rattling sound - but only when turning right.

Post by trideout2001 »

Good afternoon everyone,

I own a Volvo S60 D5 manufactures in 2006. The car is generally in good condition, but it has a couple of noteworthy problems that I am hoping you can help me with :D

The first is that a very loud rattling or vibration occurs when turning the steering wheel right. This sound comes from the front right of the car, and does not happen when the car is stationary. When the steering wheel is turned left, corrected or returned back to the neutral position the noise stops. It only occurs when turning the wheel to the right.

I have also noticed that when I pull in to my driveway, there is a strange metal-on-metal or bouncing metal sound. I have read that there is an engine mount on the front right wheel arch, and I wonder if the issue is coming from there or the suspension.

If anyone has any insights, I'd love to hear them!

Cheers,
Tony

I had a rattling problem that was caused by low-power steering fluid, so check that. Does the vibration get stronger with speed?

Thank you for your reply - I will check that!

It doesn't get worse with speed, in fact it can get better with speed! It also rattles on startup...

The search continued :(

Check the front end components for wear and play, I would suspect strut spring seats or control arm bushings, look for possible contact of the control arm body to subframe contact. Also check the engine mounts, particularly the one at the right front behind the passenger wheel. Exhaust heat shields are always problematic when they become unfastened or partially so, they also make noises that sound much more serious than they are.
Low power steering fluid will make a strange sound when turning left not right, when the pump starves of fluid and cavitates. How many miles on the car?

check the large dust shield backing plate for the brake caliper.
Pull the wheel and look at the engine mount next to the crankshaft pulley.
It can collapse, see youtube.

It's done 116,000 miles. Thanks for the advice appreciate it because it seems strange that it only really occurs when turning right whilst accelerating. Will check the engine mount because being in the UK the right side is the drivers side which is where all the noise is coming from.
