Engine run without oil...makes noise...can you identify?

Post by VolvoDJ »

Hello,

My wife ran her 2006 XC70 essentially without oil for...a while. I have no idea how long it was low, but it took 4 quarts to get it to register between the high and low marks on the dipstick. She is absolutely brutal on cars...has murdered two Volvos and a Subaru since I met her 20 years ago...

It's now making the noise in the attached linked video. I'm guessing a fried exhaust valve, but not so sure as I'm more familiar with the B230 engines than I am these modern marvels in the P2 generation. The noise is loudest on the back of the engine, right below the circular plug in the center of the video.

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance for your help.

Main or rod bearing. It doesn’t really matter which, it’s a tear down

Engine swap would make more sense. T2 is plentiful and cheap.

This underscores the importance of checking oil level every 1,000 or 1,500 miles in the 2.5T engines.

Simply bc these 2 5T engines consume ~ 1 qt every 1,500 miles or so.

Virtually all cars have oil PRESSURE sensors, some do not have oil LEVEL sensors.

Many BMW have oil LEVEL sensor, but the P2 cars do not.

Ouch.

Regular low knock knock knock at idle is usually main bearings. A higher pitched clatter as you rev it up is usually rod bearings.

But as Abscate said, it doesn’t matter.
