IMHO, a lot of this is a non-issue. I'm not sure if Asbestos is even used in brake shoes or protective welding sheets anymore. The most likely place a person might still encounter it would be in pipe insulation in old houses ( that white cardboard sort of stuff ), but most systems have been replaced by now. Same applies to siding or flooring.
Like wise with Lead. When it comes to what you or I will come into contact with, It is all mostly " encapsulated " ( OSHA speak for repainted ) by now, so really not the issue it once was. But certification from an abatement company is still sometimes needed to this day. When in question - wet it down if Asbestos, and wear rubber gloves if Lead, is the issue.
What non automotive projects and repairs are you doing?

What's wrong with using lead? I've seen people use it as filler when doing bodywork rather than Bondo.
I also use lead projectiles that get "expelled" pretty fast at the range.

Well just make sure you don't ingest that Lead you " expel ". I hear that can lead to death faster than eating paint chips.
When doing body work they should not be touching the Lead or breathing the fumes.
It's really just a matter of common sense, but I shouldn't talk. As a kid I remember holding Mercury that I had found in a thermostat in my bare hands

My dad played with mercury out of broken thermometers when he was a kid. And I have no intentions on eating lead of any origin.
Interesting fact, that I just recently found out, is the lead in car batteries are recycled and used in said projectiles.

How much lead is it ok to have in your system?
None lead. Zero. No amount of lead.
You still see it in old soldered copper plumbing pipe. We used to breathe it from exhaust pipes.
Lead birdshot kills Eagles and other raptors who ingest it while picking at carcasses, as well as lead bullet fragments from big game.
To think we sanded down to bare wood an entire room of historic moldings in our first house with a baby in a crib. We had him tested after we learned. He was fine.

I don't plan on having lead in my system from anything.
I've used older solder that had lead in it, and didn't think anything of it when the smoky fumes were coming off of it.
Glad your son's ok.

I have started setting an alarm for 6 AM. High temperatures here are now 100 F and the lows about 78. If I can get started on outside work before 8 AM, it is a little cooler for a couple hours. I still quit by 11 most days.
