850 front brakes.....squeeeeak

Post by 454cid »

I just ordered some Akebono pads for my front brakes. The car has had a slight squeak at the very end of my stops since I bought it, and it's getting worse.... not to the point of embarrassment, but it is annoying. The brakes looked like they had been done before I bought the car, but maybe it wasn't as recent as I thought. I may pull a wheel and look at them later today, to see what I can see.

If I need rotors, I plan on getting the Ate coated.

I replaced the rear pads shortly after I bought the car, as they were very worn, and looked to be original.

For rotors I usually use coated Zimmermann. Pads Akebono.

These cars were always noted for brake squeaking. Some cheaper brands of pads are bad for it.

When we did the 302 swap on my wife's GLT, I think we started with Pagid pads. Dusty and squeaky. Swapped to Bosch, and they've been quiet and good since .

I've got Akebono's on the P2R swap on my T5 and they squeak bad when cold (First few stops in the morning). very annoying. I want to swap them out.

Any particular reason why you use Zimmerman? I figured ATE, since they made the originals.

Dusty, is also something I'm trying to get away from. Whatever is there now, makes a lot of dust.

I've always heard good things about Akebono, in general, and the Amazon reviews seemed good. I ordered them from FCP, Though. I hadn't considered Bosch.

I considered doing the 302 swap, but I have 15" rims with new tires.

Can't speak to the Bosch pads, but 6 years ago fitted a set of Bosch rotors to an 850. They did not last all that long and warped using Volvo pads.

My front right brake also started squeaking shortly before I come to a complete stop. When turning left, I hear something scraping, perhaps pad on rotor. I need to disassemble and check it out. So maybe you've got something stuck or dragging.

The Zimmermann coating is quite nice, keeping the wheel mating surface free of rust. I've purchased two sets of front/rear rotors from them and they've worked out well. My rears showed 13/1000" runout but I think I installed them wrong. Now, I use a dial indicator to check the runout of all rotors on a metal lathe (without power, spun by hand), the wheel hub face, and the rotor after installation.

ATE may make the OE, well they did, the last OE rotors I bought were made in China..................! I returned those.

I used Brembo front rotors on our P2 after 3 sets of OE Volvo failed in 40,000km including one re-grind!!

Should have added, I am on my 2nd set of Akebonos on my limited mileage V70R. The car came with a half worn set and I have only added another 14,00-km to that before replacing them because of a bad caliper due to lack of use and significant rust on the rear side of the front rotors.

So far no squealing with those or the ones that have been on my son's P2 for about 2 years or so. Does it mean it can't happen. Don't know but not in my experience.

According to FCP the Volvo and Brembo rotors are from China, but the ATE is from Germany, and Zimmerman is DE (Germany, I guess). It's likely Volvo isn't always sourcing current parts from the same vendor as they did for production.

I still don't know what I actually need. I have yet to pull a wheel off. I did look at one side though the rim, and could still see quite a bit of life left on the outside pad. Hopefully, the inside pad is fine too, as I'd rather not mess with a sticking caliper.
