Which older volvo do you recommend? [merged]

Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.

1992 - 1997 850, including 850 R, 850 T-5R, 850 T-5, 850 GLT
1997 - 2000 S70, S70 AWD
1997 - 2000 V70, V70 AWD
1997 - 2000 V70-XC
1997 - 2004 C70

P80 seats are far and away the best I have sat in. 98-00 my preference. P2 seats are okay but not as comfortable or supportive.

P2 seat in our 06 XC70 is awful. 2-3 hours max is all I can do on that seat as opposed to 11+ in a P80.

I was trying to go easy on abscate. He's about to post up how great the P2 seats are. But yeah there's really no comparison. 95-97 seats are also much better than P2 (I haven't tried 94 or earlier; likely the same).

93-94 are identical to 95-96

P2 seats are great

P80 seats are the best seat known to the human species.

More details please. Mileage, records, general condition? Squeaks from tailgate and dash, the door guide broke off the body of mine after wind caught the driver door. Apparently the body metal is thin where it mounts. Also my 98 V70 Cross Country was AWD so I cannot comment on the durability of the FWD drive train. The warranty did replace the heater core for leaks. The body and interior overall were excellent for that time. Personally I would rather have a 98 V90. June

I on the other hand would go for the 98 V70GLT. Easier to find parts for and simpler mechanicals.

I always recommend buying the best you can find, and taking into account your skill set/time/energy for repairs.

As June says, if you can give us more detail on vehicles info we can help with guidance.

I've had a few 240's and I love them.

I got my first 850 (96 GLT-NA/manual) thinking I would use it as a driver and leave well enough alone. Nope. I wound up loving the platform and found myself a turbo car after we'd had my wife's '97 855GLT for a while.
I really like the P80's, but I would stay with an 850 vs the '98-'00, personally. Some of it is aesthetics, and some is systems related.

The '98 GLT is just like my wife's '97 GLT, but with a worse interior. (I don't mind the exterior of the 98-00 that much, as evidenced my the XC nose swap on my '97 T5). I am NOT a fan of the '98-'00 interiors.

If I wanted a RWD car, I'd go for a 700-series or a 940.

Nothing newer strikes my fancy (Our '97 850's are our newest vehicles out of the 6 we have).
