2002 V70 (Engine Mount(s) with fluid)?

Post by Mr. Detail »

After getting my car back from the mechanic today, I was told that at least one of my engine mounts was leaking fluid.
First of all, I did not even know that mounts had fluid. I thought everything that cushioned the car was made just of rubber.
Anyway, can someone take a quick look at the attached PP slide and tell me which engine mount has fluid in it?
The mechanic said there were 4 or 5 engine mounts on my P2.

The two on the right have hydraulic fluid in them. They are referred to as the front and rear lower engine mounts.

MDK, are those "acorns" easy to replace or to access on my own?

Not that big of a deal if you know what to do. 1a auto have videos on how to.. on YouTube XC70 V70 S60 2001-2009 Basically the same. You have to loosen the motor mount that sits directly below the serpentine belt (passenger side) loosen whatever mount your trying to replace and put a jack on the oil pan.. I recommend checking out the videos first MDK

Not too difficult, fairly easy if you’ve done it before…FCP Euro also has a video…

Might as well change the other mounts while at it. Need a 15mm swivel socket for the top nut on the front mount and a 14mm swivel socket for the bottom bolt on the rear mount, most difficult part of the service, removing and installing that bolt.

I find a long 1/4” extension fits perfectly against the sway bar and gives enough clearance for that one.

The swivel socket I used was 3/8” drive with an 8 inch, more or less, extension. Just cleared that gap, don’t think a 1/2” drive/swivel will fit thru. That bolt can really be a bear if frozen in place, difficult to square up the socket and get enough torque, possible to break bolt head off. Also, be careful not to cross-thread it when re-installing.

Quick reference note

Sometimes these mounts are referred to the engine in which case it’s the front engine mount under the serpentine belt , and the hydraulic mounts are left and right.

The other two are called upper and lower torque rods.

Volvo references then to the engine in the web store.

If they are referenced to the car , the serpentine belt is called the right mount and the hydraulics are front and back!
