I'm going to look at a 2001 V70 wagon. It has a transmission service light on. I'm also at least partially aware of issues with 2001 transmissions. Does this message necessarily mean an error in function or is it also used for an ATF/filter change reminder? I've never heard of such reminders for the transmission, but I'm new to European cars. The auction listing says it drove fine, but I won't be able to drive it myself, just pull forward and reverse back into it's parking spot.
Is there anything I can easily check when I look at it? Should I avoid this car based on the service light alone?
The car only has about 82K miles on it, but I'd rather not have transmission issues with a car I need to start driving right away.... I want to get my rust free 850 off the road before winter.
There's also a 2006 XC70 Cross Country. It has about 102K miles, It's got a missing driver's side CV shaft and "vehicle shutters at time while driving because of it". I would think the CV shaft wouldn't be a big deal to replace, but I have my doubts about that being the cause of a shudder. The AWD sure would be nice this winter.
I'll have a cheap scanner with me, but I doubt it'll tell me about Volvo specific codes.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, for that transmission, if the car (wagon) goes into "limp" mode it might need what they call a park neutral safety switch which is mounted on top of the transmission under the air cleaner A good flushing with this stuff (16 quarts ) could never hurt ..

When my 2001 V70 transmission started acting up, it was not immediate failure. Try to check the fluid level, smell and color. The code might clear and it will drive OK for a while. A fluid flush may help, but new fluid in a nasty trans may loosen all the gunk and cause filter block with sudden death.
Replacing CV shaft is not a big deal, but several hundred $. I would try as used axle to check out the rest of the car before spending money on new axle.
Try to buy cheap with these unknowns and unknowables.

My experience with the P2 used car market is that most of them do not have functioning AWD. Haldex pump is usually bad, less commonly it is a bigger issue like with angle gear.
You can check with VADIS or by getting all four wheels up in the air.

2001 v70 is a no go.... it's got evidence of mouse activity, and it's sluggish pulling out of its parking spot.

Oh, I thought the P2 system was better than the P80 awd system. I did talk to the man that evaluates the cars for the auction house, and his impression was that the shudder was caused by the CV shaft missing, since it can't transfer power the way it was designed. Could that be a pump issue? What does the pump actually do?
They've also got an XC90, but I have not researched that at all, yet.

P2 AWD is definitely better than P80, and 06-07 is the best of the P2.
The pump is at the rear to recirculate/filter the oil in the Haldex unit and when it goes out the AWD shuts down. Not likely related to a shudder especially one up front. The good news is it is not too hard to fix (but in the rust belt watch out ...) and then the AWD hums along again. There are some other Haldex issues that come up, too. All require the same effort to fix: Drop the prop shaft (not trivial), disassemble at the Haldex, reassemble, refill the Haldex oil, re-install drive shaft.
We may have a terminology issue here, the CV shaft can't be missing/absent on a P2, is it the "prop shaft" i.e. the rear drive shaft that is missing? Or what do you mean by "missing?"

Wow! I've never seen that! It's got low miles right? Don't know why they'd remove that CV shaft and continue to drive it, definitely where the shudder is coming from but the bigger question is: why did the remove it and not put another shaft in?

I don’t think you can remove a single axle shaft and drive the car. Wont the front diff just spin?
