Getting ready to do some front end work that will require a shade tree alignment. I watched a few vids on the subject, the ones that involve string. But I got to thinking --
given the Front track is 61.1" and Rear is 60.9", giving a difference of 3/16"", and toe in is 1/8" can I simply string a tight line From back of the back tire to the front of the front, and adjust so the line touches the front and rear sidewall of the front tire?

If your front and rear toe are both off... Regardless, no you must use the center of the wheels from side to side, front and back to establish parallel in order to know where each wheel stands and adjust accordingly.

I'm just looking to align enough to hold me until I get to the shop. Like a week or so

If your tires match you can use a tape measure on the tread to get it close enough to drive locally, a telescoping rod inside. I’ve gotten them close on tie rod end replacements by just counting threads

Thanks - I'd forgotten about this one - I used it on a VW I had way back..
I'm getting new tires and alignment in a couple of weeks so I just need "close enough" for now, but close enough for highway driving.
