oil leak on 2.4L

Post by volvocare »

Hello, here is my problem.

I change my own oil on my 1996 850 so I get to see the underneath about once every 3 months or so. This time, I saw what appeared to be oil coming out the back side of the engine (side facing the firewall). It was coming from about 3/4 way down the side...mileage is approx 100m. I've changed over to synthetic about 6-9 months ago. 5W30.

Here is my question. Are these engines known to break a gasket on that side of the engine or/and would the change over to synthetic cause it to leak. If casket is culprit, which one usually let's go...

All info. would help. tks Paul

It's not a turbo? I don't think it is because I think all turbos from that year were 2.3...

Then it's probably the engine's gaskets.

The petroleum oil makes deposits around seals, which blocks oil from the seals and the seals shrink. Then you put synthetic oil in and it cleans out the deposits.
