coolant leak

Post by beenagoodcar »

Coolant leak on a Volvo V70 2.4 turbo. Every 20 to 2hours of driving I need a cup or two of coolant. After turning the car off and waiting 15 or so minuites the overflow tank still has pressure. There is no wet areas on the driver's side or passengers side floor. the oil level is good and no sign of anti-freeze mixed. How can I have a leak if it maintains pressure?

If it isn't a blown headgasket, maybe the heater core is leaking? That..is a pain in the ar*e to fix, because the whole dashboard needs to come out. Speaking from experience with other car brands, sometimes when attempting to remove the whole heater unit behind the dash, breaks it.

Heater core would mean wet driver's footwell, but the foam is so thick and porous it would take months to notice. Might be worth removing the carpet completely and inspecting.

My two coolant leaks were the radiator itself, and the thermostat on both my cars. You don't see any cruddy buildup near any fittings ?

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Feels like I’m repeating myself but buy a coolant pressurizer. They’re cheap, HF has a kit that works fine. Coolant leaks can be very hard to find without that type of tool. Could of course be a warped head also.

15 minutes isn't long enough, try it after it sits overnite and is stone cold.
If you still get pressure, its the head gasket.

Mileage on car?
When was the last time the water pump was changed?

I'd recommend you take off the timing belt plastic cover and look for coolant residue around the water pump and on the plastic cover.

Good luck.
