Hi, I have a United Kingdom 1997 850 T5 with OBD-II.
After considerable research it seems that ONLY the Dealer Volvo Service Computer will send data (service light reset etc) and some (!) readers will read the logger error code data if you select a year 2000 V70.
Hope this helps, and if anyone can get us poor 850 OBD-II owners closer to communicating with our otherwise wonderful cars, please help!!!
Jon
Which flavour of OBD-2 signal on 96 850 wagon?

If you are in the U.K., you can buy the Draper Reset Tool (eBay) and it will reset the service light. Like I said, besides some very specific Volvo codes, you should be able to use just about any generic code reader and at least read the engine/emissions/transmission codes from your Volvo.

Ah...good find! I had forgotten about that.
I'm not sure about the damper motor on your car but someone posted about it recently...search yesterday's and day before's entries in this 850 section...I do know that there is a plastic piece that breaks not allowing the damper motor to engage in order to change damper positions (from floor to air vents, etc.)...this might be your problem...it's trying and trying but can't do it's job so you get the "too long" code as well as possible shorting out issue.
Good luck and glad you found a solution!

I suppose you're talking about that one:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... hp?t=15249
So as in my case its the passenger side (and it's a left-hand drive car), I'll have to go and look under lower dash panel on the right side, and see if I can find out what's wrong...
As I said, this website is nothing short of a goldmine

Yes, that's the thread....good luck. Hopefully you won't have to dismantle your dash to get to whatever the problem is. If you need diagrams I can probably hunt them down, although it won't be for a euro spec. car. Just post or send me an email...I'll be on and off the site and computer today....need to do the oil change on my wife's V70 and a few other things.
Regards,
Dave
P.S. For the diagram and schematics to making your own reader, I feel this should be pinned in the repair database section. Thanks Py for this addition to MVS!

Thanks to forum member russell2419 who pointed me in the right direction, I can now confirm my car is a 97'.
The following page at volvospeed explains how to decypher your 850's VIN and identification plate:

Thanks a lot!

I just found this nice PDF file summarizing the procedure to use to read codes of 96-onwards (but pre-OBD2) cars. It is basically what I told above, in another format, perhaps a little bit more clear.
