Does anyone know if the central locking switch (to the left of the steering wheel) has a light?
It should be illuminated. The bulb has a socketed base and it twists out from the rear of the switch.

Just changing some dash bulbs in my new /old 1995 850 turbo 153k and I have a few observations. There is no way (short of de-soldering the board) to change the info switch bulb as the design locks the bulb between a circuit board and the plastic back. This is after you open the switch up (the 4 little tabs) . Solution is to just break the bulb find the 2 holes that the wires follow to the base and use that base as a socket for a radio shack 272-1154.
Total cost 1.50.
Bad design.

You can also convert all the bad lamps in the other switch lights to sockets for the same 272-1154 from radio shack. Just break the bulb and file the white plastic down till you see two holes. The wires from the old lamp will still be inside. A perfect socket.

I had to remove the speedometer to replace a broken odometer gear. When I hooked things back up, the odometer worked, but the light for the LCD at the bottom of the speedometer would not light. I didn't think I messed with that (wherever it is). I replaced the 4 lights that illuminate the dash (all in a line) and they work fine. Can anyone tell me where this bulb is located? I dont recall seeing a bulb associated with the LCD readout module.

The module was removed with two screws and it had a green electrical plug, but I don't remember seeing a bulb there.

Other posters refer to a bulb that is the CLOCK bulb. The clock is part of the data that can be read out of the LCD based on switching a dial on the dash. This may be what I need to replace, but I simply don't remember seeing one there.

My Volvo is a '95 850 turbo. If you can confirm this, I'd appreciate it.

There is a lamp in the information center/time temp gauge on all of our 850's. It is a twist base bulb that looks, from the back, like the the idiot light bulbs. Here is a picture of one:

Your lamp base may be a different color but it is centered on the back of the display, 1/4 turn will remove it.

You can replace the lamp either with the lamps form 12velectronics or with some cutting and wrapping of the leads a Radio Shack lamp.

Whew.... took off the dash pad yesterday (with my girlfriend on the wrench too) to do 2 things...

1. Replace all of the bulbs because 1/2 of them had gone out - they were still bright enough to do the job but still lame.

and

2. Change out my trip computer because I picked one up from someone on the forums and thought it would work. Well, my ''95 850 GLT 2.4L N/A doesn't seem to use this part number.

6849308 is the one I purchased and was going to put in - on the stock one, I SHOULD HAVE written the number down, or at least taken a photo... but I didn't - dumb of me. I can tell you that has the clock and the thermometer on it. Apparently they have different cable connections so I couldnt' put the trip computer in. Anyone know where I can find out what part number I need? I have the Yazaki instrument cluster.

But I was able to change out the bulbs, and that is pretty sweet. I changed the 4 main bulbs (bulb #158) and 23 of the other small ones (bulb #74) - noticing that there were some slots that didn't even have bulbs in them - strange... maybe I don't have the electrical system to light these bulbs? One of them was the "low oil level" - which would be nice to have an indicator such as that. So I just put bulbs in those spots figuring they probably needed them. But I did take the "service" light out - so I won't be paying Volvo anymore to clear that out.

Oh, and I have another question if anyone knows it - the light for the auto gear shifter - where can I purchase that? I dug into there as well because that bulb is burned out and I found it - but I guess it''s soldered into a small plastic housing. Did some internet searching and couldn't find anything on that light - looks like it's commonly used in the car too, saw an identical one on the cigarette lighter.

Thanks.

For the cigarette lighter / shifter I use the Radio Shack 272-1092 bulbs. The old ones don't really unsolder but if you use a cutoff wheel on a Dremel tool you can slice the wires on the old ones above the factory solder joint and then thread the new lamps into the socket base and solder them to the lugs. The other option is over $10.00 per bulb at the stealership.

Sure, makes sense. But I don't have the technical experience or the patience for something like that. If it involves soldering... i'd rather not do it.

Any idea where I might be able to find that part for sale outside of the dealership? Not even sure what it's called.

Also - I replaced the two bulbs behind my climate control knobs today.

While doing so I noticed that I couldn't get to the bulbs for the AC switch or the circulating fan switch. I took a photo of where I believe the bulbs are hiding and noticed that it seems to come apart. But couldn't figure out how exactly it comes apart - I got the clips off but couldn't pull it apart.

On the photo you're looking at the backside of the climate control section - I've marked some areas of interest so that you can establish your bearings.

Image

While playing with it - I lost the piece on one of my climate control knobs that makes the clicking sound when you turn it - probably something I'm going to have to get at a junk yard though. Unless anyone knows where I can purchase one and save me the time looking.

Ok, called my local Volvo dealership today and found out the part I need for my 1995 Volvo 850 Wagon with the Yazaki cluster - talking about the trip computer that is.

The old part number is: 9148574
The new part number is: 9442047

I guess they are both interchangeable it's just that one was catalogued a while ago and the other was more recent. Apparently it's still "available" from Volvo but on backorder with no ETA. So that basically means that I could be waiting forever to get one and it''s just a matter of time until they discontinue it anyway - plus the entire kit (which is part #9166689) is $459.67 - so that's not really going to happen.

So I guess i'll have to keep my eye out for that part number.... which is probably going to be a PITA.

Anyone sellin' ? Or know of a place that is likely to have one?

I'm sure others will chime in...there are other replacements and you might have to get a bit creative as cutting off one bulb from a base and "fitting" it to the current base you have on your Volvo...others have done it, usually with readily available parts from your local Radio Shack.

From the looks of your picture you have the Manual climate unit. The lamps for the A/C switch and the fan speed switch - The one that lights up in the fan speed knob are LED's and they should go to the junk yard with the car ands still be good - If they are illuminating don't even try to get to them. For that matter even if they aren't illuminating don't try to get to them. I have taken the A/C switch apart before but it is not for the faint of heart. Once you get it apart springs and contacts go flying and it is a challenge to put back together.

There are a couple of versions of the manual climate unit as far as incandescent lamps go. The older version uses the W3W lamps that you can get at any auto parts store, the newer version uses the twist on bulbs that you either need to get at the stealership or rebuild the sockets with new Radio Shack bulbs and solder them in. Those bulbs are a particular challenge as you need to remove the posts from the socket to get to a soldering surface.
