The engine runs better with a temperature regulated input air flow. In cold , wet weather around town, the throttle body can ice up, having experienced that once, it was unpleasant

Using all the parts that Volvo put on the car helps with questions like....
Funny the car started on two occasions now after the no-start incident.
So how in the world can i ever get this car to be reliable?

Oh ok i'll make sure i install it then.

I do have a slight problem though. The new pipe came already i was surprised how fast it got here.
The problem is it does not have a flared end that would fit over the short pipe on the exhaust manifold.
Now on one of the other new pipes i saw on the web the end is fared so it fits over that short pipe.
On my car it looks like they have a secondary short pipe that goes over the long pipe (that goes to the air box) and that short
pipe acts as a coupler for the long pipe and the short pipe on the exhaust manifold.

So i was wondering, does that short coupler section come off of the long pipe so it can be reused with a brand new pipe?

Here is a rough drawing of the pipes:

Short pipe on exhaust manifold:
-------
-------

Code: Select all

short joining coupler pipe installed over that pipe end:

[font=Courier New]
    --------------------
-------
-------
    --------------------

 all three connected together:

     ----------------
 -------- ------------------------------------------------
 -------- ------------------------------------------------ [air box end]
     ---------------

So the question is, does that short piece with larger diameter come off of the long pipe for reuse?
I should have tried it i guess when i had the air box out but didnt think of it right then.

Thanks.

That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Is it a volvo part or generic? I'd try it... I'll take a look at mine and see what's what.

Edit: Unfortunately, I can't get to it, right now. I forgot that I parked a 430ci Big Block Buick in front of that shelf.

Typically the flexible hose that I like to call the dryer hose, will be able to be easily removed. It's a friction fit. When it isn't tight it can make a heck of a racket. The one I got from FCP to replace was really good quality, the best I've ever had. There was more than enough so a left over length was also used on an older VW Van.

If you're in cold weather, I'd consider it necessary unless you have a garage or a block heater.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

You can expand the end of the elephant hose gently with a funnel or a dunce cap, until it friction fits the heat box and air cleaner vslve

Ok, I did some trickery and reached the hose from my car. As I mentioned it's on a shelf behind an engine. It just happened to have an open end facing me, so I used a couple Shop Vac extensions put together to lift it off the shelf behind the engine.

I had forgotten that one end is double layered. I'm pretty sure that was the exhaust header end. I used my Harbor Freight calipers to measure each open end, and they're both 2".

It is generic, but FCP Euro said it fit this car.

I dont have any problem getting it off. This is about getting a new part on.
I got the hose part but because the end is the same diameter as the pipe on the exhaust manifold it wont go on without a sleeve. I was hoping i could get the old sleeve off but dont know if that is possible yet.

Hi,

I looked at the end and tried to widen it with my hands but it is quite stiff and i dont want to break the end or i'd have to buy another one (ha ha). I'll take another look though. I would rather just put it back on the way it was, with that sleeve, if the sleeve comes off of the original hose part. I think it might because it does after all come off of the exhaust manifold pipe and that is the same diameter as the original hose. I just thought maybe someone else had the same setup with the sleeve and not the flared end. They sell another one that was $65 with a flared end but this one was something like $16 but was said on their website that it fit this car. So i guess ill just have to try it.

As a side note, i dont think i've ever seen a hose of any kind put on something without hose clamps. I think they depend on the stiffness of the pipe to keep it bridged properly between the manifold and the air box.

You need a cone shaped mandrel to expand that, fingers won’t work well. Take the time to do it right.

Worst case, use aluminum heater duct tape to tape it on to the heater box.
