Could this be why I’m still getting code P0117?

Post by 1998s70GLT »

I’m getting code P0117 on my ‘98 S70 GLT.

I changed the thermostat and sensor with OEM replacements, and I’m still getting the code & hard starts.

I looked within this connector (coming off of the alternator I believe?) and noticed how deteriorated it is. Would this be why I’m still getting code P0117 as there’s a shortage?

If so, would the solution be to cut the wires and solder new wires? I have a multimeter and saw a few post on here in reference to testing the sensor (I have never used a multimeter, but I have researched about it), but I have it installed and won’t be able to drain the coolant and what not in order to remove the sensor again and test the sensor in the described methods.

Heres one of the post I’m referencing: viewtopic.php?t=86478

Sorry but from your picture it is hard to orientate my brain cell. Looking at the pictures in the link looks like it is the ECT connector which is the engine coolant temp sensor. That connector and the wires to it are known problems. If you have replaced the ECT with an OE one and are still having an issue this may well be the problem. The connectors corrode and the wires near the connectors rust internally and fail.

The connector should be mounted on the back of the power steering pump if I recall correctly.

This also controls the engine cooling fan so is important to make sure it is working correctly.

The link also gives resistance values for the ECT to ensure it is reading correctly relative to the outside ambient temp.

Should have added, this can cause poor starting, and particularly when hot.

Those connectors suck when they start to get old.

Why can't you drain the coolant? Collect it into a container and reuse it.

You either need to replace the sensor, or try and clean the connections up and hope that helps.

The harness side connector on my '97 T5 just fell apart when I was doing one work on the car and trying to salvage the original plug. I cut both ends off and just installed a WeatherPak connector. The only trick there is to keep the wire orientation the same.
You can probably buy stock replacement connector pigtails to splice in as well.

I connected the corroded wires directly to the ECT sensor wherein that code (P0117) was gone. Maybe if I get a better coil connector it'll stay in place?

I will also order a soldering kit and take a go at replacing the wires completely, but for now, it seems that as long as the wires are properly connected, I'm all good.

@Neil, seems as if the wires/connectors are bad.

@Chuck W, I wasn't able to drain the coolant because i don't have a funnel with a screen and didn't want to contaminate it before going on a road trip.

Well glad you got a way forward and like you said that replacing the connector or direct wiring may be the way to go with heat-shrink on the join. PITA if you have to change again but do-able. Leave extra wire and you can just snip and re-connect a new one if you ever need one.

2021 summer I replaced the ECT sensor after heat/resistance testing to solve a hot start problem from info posted here. At the same time i cut back the corroded signal wires beyond the splice connector a few inches and crimp spliced those connections. Recently had a few coolant problems and leaks and have replaced the sensor again which was not responding to temp changes as designed.

Now getting P0117 code and had the hot start problem again. I would replace the signal wires further but these run into a closed cable bundle to who knows where.

Any experienced reply appreciated.

I ran into a similar problem last week on my '97 850, at the connector that controls the cooling fan relay. It looks like the same type of connector shown above on the ECT. The failure mode seems to be the insulator around the barrel pins disintegrates and allows the barrel pins to back out of the connector shell, leading to a no-connect. Not sure what the insulator material is... but after 20-25 years it loses elasticity and cohesion, and crumbles.

I bought a 'harness kit' from FCP, due to arrive today, and will replace the broken connector.
