I have several jugs of Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 full synthetic oil (made from natural gas) which I bought for another car which I no longer have. Can I use this in my 2005 XC70 (150k) and 2006 V70 (200k)? I read somewhere that this oil is intended for newer engines of lower mileage - I'm not sure if this is true and if so, why that would be the case. Historically I've been using 10W30 high mileage synthetic oil in these cars, mostly depending on the deal that is around at the time. Would like to use this spare oil if possible unless there is some major reason not too. I live in Northern Virginia so it gets hot and cold.
I know oil is one of those topics that causes a lot of discussion and differing opinions and I know little about oil so apologize if this is a stupid question.

If it's the same Platinum in this test you should be fine. I personally would not use 30W for hot summers in NC but if you don't exercise your turbo too much it's within spec. 5W40, 0W40 are good all year around oils for VA as well as here in NC.
He has another video on test of around 10 oils and Pennz came in either first or second. I haven't used it since the mid 80's probably so can't give you any feedback but it did perform well in his test.

I agree with it should be fine. My 2004 S80 T6 has run solely on Redline 5W30 for years. That's in Jacksonville, Florida heat. I run it hard and at 220K XW30 grade oils have protected my engine and turbos. Oil change intervals are the real key for protection. June

Have you done valve stem seals? If not, oil is dripping in cylinders and burns away, however Red Line is rich in calcium, that forms some heavy cement-like deposits. Chunks of that mess get trapped between valve face and seat. I've got a burnt exhaust valve after using Red Line for a few years with worn stem seals.

Absolutely. Get some 15w40 and use a couple of quarts with each oil change.iamhives wrote: ↑01 Mar 2023, 20:05 I have several jugs of Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 full synthetic oil (made from natural gas) which I bought for another car which I no longer have. None of that has happened to my car. At 219K last year the driver side turbo finally started seeping some oil by so I had Osteen Volvo compression check both wet and dry, scope each cylinder checking for excessive carbon and or any abnormal wear like scratching of cylinder walls before replacing the turbos and catalyst. My mechanic reported that my engine is perfectly healthy. I personally inspected the removed turbos and exhaust ports on the engine. They were clean. Turbos were still in good shape, no end play, and no cokeing (may have misspelled that). In fact my mechanic was surprised at the condition for the age and mileage. I change the oil regularly, use Shell premium 99% of the car's life. Valve train is silent and still have original factory installed seals. The head has never had the cover off. The engine was carefully inspected at 219K as the repairs were going to be quite expensive and the dealership wanted to be sure the seeping turbo was the cause of the oil consumption. I have had the car back since last July and the oil level stays perfectly on the full line between changes. (3K miles) I don't discount your experience, but Redline has protected mine exceptionally well. My car's engine is silent at idle. Nor can any vibration be felt while it runs.vtl wrote: ↑02 Mar 2023, 07:19Have you done valve stem seals? The car is as smooth and quiet as a 1990 Lexus 400 was when they were new. It's one of the things that made me fall so in love with the S80 T6. Blessings, June

With regard to mechanical wear I saw maybe 30% of wear found in a similar engine (same T2) with about same miles. Using boutique oils like Red Line and Amsoil Signature and short OCI does help with the wear.
My personal failure was not replacing the seals when I first suspected them. Also what quickly killed them is trips up north where the engine had to work hard for 8-9 hours a day, for more than a week in a row. Despite weather in high 30 or low 40s, the engine bay have seen a lot of heat. Fuel consumption was as bad as 8 MPG, for hours. Luckily, no head warping, just the seals gave up.

In the Porsche world Swepco & Brad Penn are both used for the high ZDDP.
Swepco 306 and Brad Penn Racing 1 oils

"I like & use Swepco based on a Rennsport dyno test on a 3.2 P-car motor.
Steve Weiner noted a 8-10 hp gain over other top brands tested.

Who uses swepco motor oil?

"I use swepco or BP. I tend to find swepco a little easier to find but since I moved to LA it is easy to get BP. I like the 5 gallon swepco units (19L) over opening 20 individual quarts of BP.
When I attended Bruce Anderson's engine building class it was clear that Mr Woods' was using swepco in 4 cams, 935s, and 917s. Good enough for me."

+1 for the Prad Penn oil MoVolvos recommend. It's called Penngrade 1 now. I am using the SAE 30 high performance oil in my 1991 740 Turbo. The car really likes it. It is green in color. June
