2001 V70XC - Switched to Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5W30

Post by xHeart »

I hope y'all taking time with family and friends this Easter Sunday.

I'm on 3rd annual oil and filter change since switching both our cars to full synthetic, that is, oil and filter change once a year.

Our 1997 850 runs on Platinum Euro Full Synthetic 5W-40, see this thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=74828#p460884. 5W-40 has now proven to crank effortlessly under extreme temps during overnight curbside parking.

Over on V70XC, it is Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-30 grade. There wasn't much loss of oil on dipstick, but the bottom of oil filter housing collected fine material mixed with oil -- a teaspoon worth. Here is a photo of oil pan before the oil & filter change. What to expect?

I think the pan is tilt towards the rear so the oil will accumulate at the rear bottom of the pan but may be leaking actually from the front of the engine ? I stand corrected. If it leaks from the front of the engine, look with a flash light if it leaks from under the intake manifold, it could be a broken PCV hose. The PCV on these cars needs be done preferably around 80000 miles.

If the leak is from the rear it may be the oil cooler (the black part in the picture)

Just after my first oil change on this S60, I was fooled by a minor spill at the oil filler that had slowly made its way down to the pan.
(I thought I had cleaned it up) but it looked like a scary leak from the top PCV hose.
... that was over 10 years ago :D

WHY did you make this switch to full synthetic on the XC?

Why use anything but full synthetic?

Poor regular oil is the reason the US market has such ridiculous oil change intervals to begin with ;-)

Penzoil Platinum has caught my curiosity also, primarily because it's a group 5 made from a relatively new process. I haven't tried it through. Supposedly it does a really good job keeping combustion deposits at bay.

I would just run an A3/B4 in both Volvos. One oil for both cars.

Mobil 1 0w40
Castrol 0w40 or 5w40
Valvoline 0w40 or 5w40
Pennzoil 0w40

I switched the S60 over to 0w40 almost 4 years ago. No more sludge in the oil filter either.

Do you mean the GTL process? Gas to liquid.

Mobil 1 0w40 is GTL as well if that matters to you.

Just don’t mix Shell and Mobil oils. Either one is fine, don’t mix.

All current engine oils are compatible. No issue whatsoever.

What if someone had Mobil 1 oil, but did an oil change and switched to Pennzoil/ Shell? You can bet the new oil is mixing with what was left in the sump.
