03 S60 won't JUMP START after sitting for a year.

Post by radium2013 »

My 03 S60 has been sitting for one year. I didn't start it in the period so the battery is obviously dead.
Today, I tried to jump start it with an external USB jump starter. But I got nothing after turning the key, no dashboard, no sound, no crank...
Now I am thinking about remove and recharge the battery and try again.

But anyone know why nothing happened with USB jump starter? It worked before with shorter sitting period, like for a winter or so.

Any tips are appreciated!

The External USB jump starter is only good for minor discharge.
Let's say you are on vacation for 2 weeks, and come back, the battery voltage is 11.50V, the USB
charger can bring it up to 12V to start the car.

But if your battery is down to 6-7V or flat, the USB charger is useless.
In that case you need the 120V charger.

You may need a new battery soon.
At this time, Cost Exide H6 battery is only $119.

Most other batteries H7, H8 are now > $160 and up.

A battery that sits for a year will be dead and need replacing. It will draw Down the jump start and cause running problems even if it does start

Modern Volvos do not like weak voltage. In the old days, a battery that would crank at a moderate speed would likely start the engine. Those days are gone. When a battery is badly discharged, like yours, it will take a serious amount of power to jump start it. Serous battery power can only flow through heavy wires.
