Had a stuck exhaust VVT. Cleaned it ultrasonically (did not clean the rubber grommet,) and now parts move freely. After putting it back together I am getting a different engine code, which I forget at the moment but will go out to get that in a minute. Should I have done something specific when cleaning that VVT?

I don’t think my ‘96 850 had VVT, and they introduced them on the intake side first in later models. In any case, a VVT solenoid is electric and shouldn’t be wet, but the sprocket it acts on is all metal, is this what you cleaned?
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.
2017 XC90 Inscription - My best Volvo by far, but Ex-wife departed & I had to sell.
2001 S80 T6 - rebuilt trans, head gasket, fixed & sold
1997 V70 - kid car, sold
1996 850 GLT - found under bridge, 2 year refurb project, commuter car, kid car, T-Boned - SIPS saved passenger. Totaled.
1997 VW GTI VR6 - exceedingly fast.
1971 VW Type II/231 - it was pointed out by management that the children would be killed in it.

Yep, just the metal parts, thanks. I left the electronic part out of the cleaning solution, along with the rubber grommet. The engine code (P03**?) has gone away since my last post...hmmmmm. I do have a P0017 code, but that predates the VVT cleaning. I have not cleaned or changed the oil separator box under the intake manifold and suspect that is the source throwing the code. I do welcome any suggestions as to what else could be causing the P0017.

Yeah P0017 is bank 1 (intake/front) camshaft does not swing by it’s hall sensor when the ECU predicts it should. This could be the crankshaft being off +- 1 or 2 teeth or the same for the intake cam. The procedure for the front cam has to be followed precisely. Rather than hose your engine, have a good rest, eat breakfast and remove / replace the timing belt. I usually have to find the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley with my little finger and push toward the block to find the corresponding ridge.

You have to follow the cam timing procedure precisely on VVt cars, it is not just as simple as aligning the marks.
