Windshield Washer Not Working

Post by MrAl »

Hi,

I checked the washer today and found that it does not spray anymore.
I put in new fluid, and still nothing.
I hear the pump running though.
Think it could be a clogged line or something? How would i troubleshoot that?

Thanks.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

You're in luck because I just had to troubleshoot this. With the hood open, do they spray? In my case, The rubber line shifted and got pinched by the hood hinge. Is the line blown out and leaking somewhere? It runs from the bottom of the tank, above the fender liner, then up through the fender by the hood hinge, then on to under the hood insulation. There are also multiple check valves along the way. One by the pump near the inline filter (could be plugged), then one at each nozzle which doubles as the T and L fitting. They can clog up. Do you have headlight washers? Do you have the fan pattern or dual stream washer nozzles? The 2 stream ones can easily be cleaned with a safety pin. To test the pump, you will have to disconnect the line at the pump and quickly connect another long length of hose that's at least taller then the fender, or else gravity will push the washer fluid out. And general safety note, wear gloves and glasses, as you really don't want washer fluid on or in your body.

The check valves can stick as they get old and if they don't see regular use, same with the pump.

I have posted a thread on the subject before and on how to open the valves and check them.

I need to go through the system on my 850, too. My 99 S70 works fantastic, so I know the 850 can be better.

Oh ok thanks.

Looks interesting. I'll have to try to find the valves i guess.
I couldnt do much today it was raining out. Just took off my solar panel for some minor maintenance. Got back in the house as soon as possible.

Ok thanks. Today i had to reinstall my solar panel on the car and almost got blown away by the cold wind, so i am waiting for a better day to do some more stuff that has to be done outside of the car.
