New bougicord wires not correct? And oil filler cap recommendation

Post by jsrnsis »

I bought a set of Bougicord spark plug wires, part number 9135700 for a 98 v70, which is supposed to fit these 20 valve cars, yet all 5 of the leads to the spark plug don't have enough reach to make good contact with the distributor. For some reason, the coil to distributor wire isn't as recessed in the rubber boot and clicks onto the posts of the coil and distributor and stays on snugly.

Top is one of the new bougicord spark plug leads, middle is the bougicord distributor to coil wire, and on the bottom is the old wire of unknown brand.

The plastic boot that fits over the spark plug is also longer too, and caused the rubber boot to be sticking halfway out of the head instead of flush like with my other cars. Top is the bougicord, bottom is the old wire.

Here's the box I got from Eeuroparts.

Looking on most parts websites for the same part number, the bougicords have gray plastic boots, and come with clips to keep the wires together, while pelican parts shows the wires I received.

Has anyone had this problem or know why these wires would be like this?

Side note: the wires were bought to replace the known good wires I took off the v70 to install on the 97 GLT(which was needed urgently by a family member) that developed rough starts and intermittent misfires and codes for misfires on a cylinders. The leads on the 97 had gone bad from a large amount of oil seeping down the oil filler neck and filling up the spark plug cavities.
PCV job had been done less than 50k miles ago, no inflation during the glove test, tried replacing the oil cap gasket many times. Finally gave in and bought an OEM Volvo oil cap from FCP, which despite having an ad for Castrol on it, fixed the problem and the top of the engine has been bone dry.

TLDR: Aftermarket oil filler caps are garbage, Volvo OEM cap fixed the problem.

There have been at least one or two others that have had this issue in the last 6 months. The 10V and 20V are different.

As for oil filler cap. The seal needs to be replaced every 2-3 years if you want it to stay leak free. The seal shrinks and goes hard, then it leaks. Cheap aftermarket seal rings. No need to replace the whole cap, but as you have done should be good for a while!

They got bought by a mega auto parts online organization. I kept up some communication with one of them, a VP level person (maybe? I forget...) or somesuch, after the buy-out. I got the feeling they were not all-in on understanding the nuances of Volvo parts.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Problem might have been cheap seal rings that hardened within weeks, but the filler cap that was on the car was actually loose enough that you could move it around on the filler neck.

Unfortunately FCP is out of stock for these bougicord leads that are recommended here and had them listed as discontinued, which seems to be the case with more and more parts lately.

I just I checked FCP as well. Seems STI is the only brand available currently. I can't believe something as spark plug wires are being discontinued. Sounds like a coil on plug conversion might be in the future for me. What does fcp do with warranty parts that are NLA?

IPD lists the Bougicord plug leads for a 1994 turbo. Did not check for a NA but I believe they are the same.

It looks like what happened to me. I bought through FCP, and was shipped 10-valve parts. I think Bougicord mislabeled some boxes. FCP replaced them, on their dime, and did not have me ship the wrong wires back. The second set was correct, and is currently on the car.

I shipped the wrong wires to a board member in Australia, since he has a 10-valve. Unfortunately, they ended up being wrong for his car, too. Apparently for a short time Volvo used a different connector on the distributor cap and he had the other design.

Eeuroparts made me send the parts back, but kept saying they only take back "new and uninstalled" parts. I don't know how I would have figured out they were wrong unless I tried to install them. Just something to keep in mind if you have to order from them. Or else I would have offered them up to anyone here that needed them.

I called IPD and they said they haven't had any returns of their bougicord leads in a couple years besides one person who got two of the same length wires in a set, so they must not have gotten any 10 valve parts mixed in.
