More info: Warren makes it. They also make the Walmart Supertech brand.

Typically I use Castrol GTX and change it at 2500 to 3000 miles.
So whats better in the long run??? Synthetic oil and doing longer oil changes 5000 to 8000 or the more frequent changes (even with cheap oil?

My 98 V70 and 96 850 both have 230K and run very strong. Both only use Premium Gas.

Deciding if you believe the spec would. Be step two, to frugality nirvana.
I used to work for Shell Oil and they would bottle various house brands of oil using their filling machines. The difference? They changed the labels on the bottles running through the filling machine.

What makes good oil is the base that it's developed from.
Sure it's the cheap or affordable one you go for and see " no problems" but good quality base oil manufacturers (Penrite,Redline,Amsoil) always test at near to new at the usual time of oil change you would change your crappy kmart oil at which is seriously degraded and the engine is worn a bit. . Are you serious about looking after a motor that costs you wages. Time off work. Dollars to run another vehicle for downtime. High cost of parts and labour. For what, to save a few dollars an oil change, it's a no brainer (or, those with no brains saying it's fine with utter garbage oil, they the no brains....)
Cheers! LesM.

Warren makes a lot of store brand oils (costco/kirkland oil, Amazon oil, etc). Most likely they are all the same with different labels.

And most importantly, carry the most modern SP (or SN Plus if you find an older bottle) specs.

With the original post only going back to 2016, do oil threads go back before the origin of the internet?

I wonder if prior to internal combustion engines people debated about horse feed.

FlyingVolvo wrote: 09 Apr 2016, 20:23 That stuff is dirt cheap and looks like garbage to me. You don't need to spend a ton of money for boutique fancy oil, but seriously, at least go with some Mobil 1 or something. You can get those 5 quart jugs for a great price at Walmart (~$25?). Don't get oil from auto stores. I'm not Walmart fan, but I will go there for motor oil. That cheap oil probably has few if any additives. Oil is the one thing that keeps your engine from shelling itself, definitely not the best place to go super cheap on.

Please don't use that stuff.
The oil in question meets GF-6 and SP. Those are both current specs. I wouldn't label it as "garbage oil".

I do realize it's not a well known brand name and I realize that in many respects in life you do get what you pay for. Tractor Supply doesn't actually make the oil. Like most private label brands it's blended by someone and unless the bottle is lying, meets current, up to date specs.

I fully agree that there are differences in oils. But I suspect ( i have no means to really test this) that those differences come into play on extended drain intervals, when using boutique oils (the top of the line Redline oils for example), having some high HP/turbo car that sees a lot of strain, and whether or not you are looking for an oil that meets some particular characteristic (cleaning ability or higher Zinc levels for older cars).

I am not convinced those factors come into play when using a drain interval of 3-5K. especially on my non-turbo.

I personally have no problem using an oil that meets the current spec of SP (unless company was lying) in my 1999 that called for the ancient SG spec. :-)

oh my gosh.
I didn't even notice the date on the original post. :-)

I thought a post about Traveller oil from Tractor Supply showed up because they have some of their oils on clearance right now (I missed out on sale).

I just spent 30 mins trying to find out who actually makes it (It may have been made by different people over the years) for a thread that is 7 years old. :-)

$30 for Castrol Synthetic, 7500 mile interval
Oil cost 0.5 cpm

debating costs on the 0.1cpm scale doesn't make a lot of sense.

Another ancient thread creeks back to life.
None of the big retailers can afford taking the chance on selling purposely mislabeled oil; it's hard to imagine any packagers going along with a scam anyway. Our forced-induction cars came from Mother Göteborg with synthetic, and since I know for a fact I'm not smarter than the building full of engineers who designed the car, I stick with that, in the weight specified in the owners manual. The price point between regular Dino squeeze and synthetic isn't enough to buy a six pack, so why bother.
The real geekfest is over on bobistheoilguy - but fair warning, don't go too far down that rabbit hole if you are easily influenced by pseudo-science psychobabble. The best information I've seen published recently is by a petrochemical engineer in Hot Rod.
