What are the current thoughts on waterpumps? Belts I am ok with on Continental and INA pulleys/tensioner.
I know the normal is Aisin or Volvo (Aisin). I am trying to keep costs down but not cut corners as we know it will just come back and bite you in the ass. I can get an Aisin pump from Rock auto for around $90 CDN and the timing belt and pulley kit for about $170. That seems good to me. I have no history on the car so I don't know how old/good the hydraulic tensioner is.
Question: I see there are several Continental 'kits' which have the water pump, tensioner, TB, gasket and belt. Not cheap at around $450 but they don't list what is in the kit in terms of suppliers.
Aisin does a kit:
https://www.thewrenchmonkey.ca/auto-par ... ater-pump/
Question: Do turbos have different timing belt kits? Surely they are all the same, water pump in the same place, same tensioner and idler pulleys so are there any differences?
Thanks,
Neil.

I mean there shouldn't be any difference for NA vs turbo but I don't know if the cam gears are different. The cam shafts are different between the two. That's the only thing I can think of. Aisin water pump all the way. I just purchased one this week and it has the volvo branding ground off.

I replaced original water pump with SKF...7 years ago.
Hydraulic tensioner....as long as it doesn't leak and if it's still hard to compress and doesn't leak while or after compressing...i would leave it alone.
Mine still original at 400k km.
I'll inspect it on the next timing belt replacement and if it is bad i'll replace it with INA.
In EU...Febi box have INA hydraulic tensioner in it.

Thanks guys. The car has just under 500,000km. Kits with the tensioner are a lot more expensive (like $400+), but still cheaper than buying it separately. Can't really see the tensioner but the belt was still tight. Problem is I have no service history on this. I guess if I do the repair then with no labor charges, maybe we do the tensioner as well for piece of mind an heading toward a stage 0 down the line. Realistically don't know how long he will keep the car and there is rust starting to appear, especially in the trunk lid and lower corners of the front fenders and rear edge of the rear fenders. Not beyond saving though or at least slowing it down!
Car still has 2 camshafts, but just less lobes. So all looks the same to me. I will get the Vin# and look up on Vida. I have seen one place selling the SKF branded water pump. I will discuss the Aisin kit with the owner as it has the Aisin water pump, INA pulleys and Aisin hydraulic tensioner but the belt is ??? Gates. Found the kit on FCP Euro website:

I bought the Aisin kit for my 20 valve 850. The Gates belt wandered a bit, but hasn't fallen off yet. I meant to check it after a few 1000 miles but never did. If I do find it still wanders I'd probably still reccomend the kit, but buy a separate belt.
The ina tensioner was not built quite as sturdy looking to me as the one I removed.

I am looking at that kit but up here most places have it on back order and buying from FCP with the exchange rate is too expensive once you add shipping and border charges/taxes.
The other issue is that there is a bit of weirdness on the TB. It looks like the belt may have to be swapped for another anyway as the 10V motor may have a 144 v's 148 tooth belt which is a different part number. With the 10V engine being uncommon this side of the Atlantic, I can't find any clear info on what is included on the tooth count in the kits claiming to fit this engine as they claim it fits them all.
I have Volvo on the case just now so hopefully they can clarify. We think the belt Part # is: 271835 and not 271746.
Even the Volvo parts sites seem to be conflicted on this!
Thanks for the help though!
Neil.

Well that sucks! The Aisin timing belt and water pump kit TKV 004 has been discontinued!! Only place that still lists it is FCP.
Nothing in Canada for this.

FCP is now also showing it as out of stock. I'm waiting for confirmation from the car owner on buying the parts. The belt part number on this parts list is 271834 but if you use that number it des not come up as an option.
I will let you know and appreciate the great offer. There are a couple of other places that claim to have it in the US. One ships to Canada with FedEx for $65 US + Border charges which will bring that up to around $100 or so.
The issue also is the belt it includes I have no way of identifying it is the correct one or not for this car. Volvo part number for the belt is:
Belt part # 271835
Volvo kit part # P/N 30758262 - Includes Timing Belt (P/N 271835), Washer, Belt Tensioner Pully Assembly, Bolt and Idler Pulley
Volvo also have a 2nd belt part number : 271746 which is listed as not available now but lists this engine as a car it fits??
I can get that kit from an on-line Volvo parts dealer for around $275 CDN or so. It does not have the water pump or tensioner. The tensioner from Volvo is around $150 CDN, and the Aisin pump is about $85 + shipping from Rock Auto. The only part that is an unknown is the tensioner as it may be OK but I have not idea on its' history.
It may need a junkyard visit to see if I can find one. There are a couple of 96 850's there but one is likely to get junked soon. Don't even know if the parts are still there.
Neil.

If the belt isn't too bad, you may be able to turn it over until you can see the part number on it. That said, if it's been on there some time, it may not be able to be read.
