P0442 code

Post by 02V70 »

My 2002 volvo v70 sometimes shows a message on the dashboard saying that the fuel filler cap is open or loose. Today, the check engine light turned on and gave the code P0442. According to Google, it signifies a small evap leak. I looked at my fuel cap, and noticed the o ring was cracked looking. Is this what is causing the problem? If not, what else can cause it, and how can I fix it?

Here is a photo of the cap.

I would start by buying and installing a new gas cap o-ring. That may solve your problem, regardless your's is in need of replacement.

+1 on that suggestion. That will cause the code, but even if it isn't it is long overdue having the seal ring replaced.

If I recall right I got a aftermarket cap and simply swapped the ring. That ring is way, way past it.
