I found the source of the fuel smell which lingered around poor Geronimo. The excessively rusted fuel filter had a small hole in it. Good thing I had a new one ready to be installed. Of course, when I began unscrewing the bracket holding it, that put pressure on the breach causing fuel to start dripping out. And when I worked to remove the filter, a shower of fuel soaked rust fell all over me and my gas collection cup. I was so ready to do a clean job having learned the sequence from doing it on the G70. Things don't work that well on Geronimo.
The fuel filter is a little loose in the bracket. Perhaps a layer of bracket metal rusted away, opening its inner diameter. Any ideas how I could pad the gap between filter and bracket? I believe the bracket was recently discontinued (though I bought one in mid 2021).
While there, I replaced the "L and J evap hoses" as I call them. Identified their clamps for the Oetiker info list. Really need to get an Oetiker removal tool because I spend way too long wrestling them out.
Tomorrow, maybe I'll get the left wheel hub and reluctor ring replaced to finally cure the multiple ABS problems. Or just battle with the O2 sensor. I've been oiling it for days but really don't think it will come out.

I hereby nominate that one for the Titanic part thread….amazing that it rusted and holed under the clamp, saving a major fuel spill
A strip of thin rubber sheet should do the trick for the padding. Trying to remember what I used
I just moved Evitas fuel filter job up the priority list

Is it too late to bag that one and send it to me for this thread?

HA! You can't fool all of us. You are going to reuse that filter to failure!abscate wrote: ↑08 Jul 2023, 02:48 I hereby nominate that one for the Titanic part thread….amazing that it rusted and holed under the clamp, saving a major fuel spill

Face the hole down , JB weld a hose to it, and feed it back into the tank! Free filtered gas!

I'll pull it out of the scrap metal bin for you. I spent a good amount of time draining the gas out. It would be interesting to autopsy this filter at likely 350k+ miles, 23 years, which ran the cheapest gas for many recent years. I have no way to store it so how can I get it to you? Could try the postal service if I properly disclose.
Today, I attacked Geronimo with a Mini-Ductor inductive heating device. Along with cooking the O2 sensor, I tried to heat the front wheel hub bolts to ease removal. I wrapped the entire hub face which receives the bolts and heated it for the maximum allowable run time, two minutes. The hub was pretty warm but not hot enough to dislodge rust. I heated the heads for 45 seconds each, twice, just to be safe. After all that, I was able to break free all four excessively rusty E-Torx bolts (unlike when I did the other side and one stuck bolt required hours of work to remove). I don't know if the Mini-Ductor really helped because I didn't try them before heating. We'll see how it does with the O2 sensor.

I have read elsewhere it's the heat/cool cycles that convinces the rust to loosen its grip, as opposed to a specific target F number. The real magic juice for me is ATF/acetone 50/50 mixed in small batches. It takes a bit of stirring to get the two to mingle, much like making vinaigrette. When it turns cloudy pink, it's ready for acid brush applique.

That filter looks a lot like the one on the 850 I was working on. I declined to swap it in fear something would break trying to remove it! I did at least wire brush the inlet/outlet areas and PB blasted them a couple of times, but don't think the owner has had it changed yet!

The filter is a 105k mile replacement item. Averaging driving, that’s 8 years. We probably have a lot of p80s in the 150-250 range on their second filter, when they should be on their 3rd or 4th

My fuel filter in the 'R' is probably 10-11 years old, but the car has travelled about 10,000 miles max in that time!
Is it due replacement.......?
