I’ve searched far and wide but haven’t been able to find a clear answer. At what point did Volvo release the B4 servo update and start putting it in the AW55-50? I had a 2001 V70 with 163k miles that had the transmission break down only the day after purchasing it. I then got a 2004 S60 with currently 149,000 miles (5,000 since I bought it,) and I’m wondering if the servo update is something I have to worry about or if it’s already done. It has a harsh 2-3 shift but only when cold. Once the car has been running for about 10 minutes it shifts smooth. I can also feel all of the individual shifts from the transmission but I’m assuming that’s the transmission mounts. The fluid looks good and it’s at the correct level. It occasionally “shudders” as if it can’t decide what gear to be in but it doesn’t do it often. There’s no CEL. So I’m wondering if I should even bother pursuing the B4 update or if it’s just the mounts or maybe something else?

Volvo did a few B4 servo updates over years. My 05 came with an updated version, but not the latest.

You actually want to feel quick, light, crisp gears engagement in this transmission, this is the best course of action in it. CVT-like shifts means it is not acting quickly enough and eating up frictions.

What ATF is filled in? I would advise draining and filling 2-3 times with a few hundred miles in between, using Volvo 1161640 ATF. This is the best ATF for this transmission, and it is not overly expensive these days.

Also I think it would benefit from activating adaptation mode right in the morning when it's cold and drive it normally. Shifts are still being adapted, even that you won't see a clear message and flashing triangle. Need VIDA/DiCE for that.
