Gates vs Aisin water pump

Post by shegarty »

Morning all - I'm preparing for another timing belt replacement on my 98 S70 and am wondering on the current comparison between Gates and Aisin water pumps. Last time I changed it with an Aisin pump but that was almost 8 years ago - no issues but I am creeping up over the 100k km change interval. Is Aisin still the better choice?

For me it still is. Aisin is still the OE supplier. One point to not is that I just bought the pump for an 850 and it came with the gasket and not any bolts. The other thing is that the mounting bolts you need are 25mm long. My old pump they were 30mm. 2 of the holes are only deep enough to accept bolts that are 25mm long which includes the pump bolt hole thickness, the gasket and the hole depth. The other 5 holes are all the ay through on an 850, but were not threaded all the way.

Compare the bolt hole flange depth on the new pump v's the old one. If they are the same you can use the old bolts, if not, the bolts are around $7 each x 7!

Good Luck!

Neil.

Not to confuse things, but I just replaced my Aisin with another Aisin. The thing that bothered me though was that the Aisin I was replacing had about 30K miles on it. While I was rebuilding my head (another story), I grabbed the various pullies and pumps to make sure they were ok. The Aisin water pump had a slight bit of play in it. That bothered me and I figured that since I had the engine apart, I may as well replace it. The car doesn't get driven as much these days so it had been 7 years, but still I was surprised.

In any case, I try and go with OEM and they were OEM. So another went in.
I'd say buy from FCP Euro as they have a lifetime warranty.

The replace interval on the water pump is 2x the timing belt

That’s 140k miles on the -1998, 210k miles on th 1999-

They use the same pump.

😀

Use the AIsin or Volvo pump only

I used an Aisin pump for my last timing job in my S70. Before the engine went, it was nearing another service 80k+ miles. I could see coolant dripping slowly out of the weep hole. Granted, the included gasket was damaged in shipping and we used some permatex goop to help seal it up. But I don't think that would cause coolant coming out the weep hole. Still, I'd trust Aisin over Gates.

Gates is owned by The Blackstone Group, buyout specialists who deal in corporate debt. I wouldn't trust them for anything more critical than a coolant tank cap - and I won't put even those on my cars.
