This is my first post in this forum. I haven't joined because the car is my wifes, and it was just a good deal when we bought it. My question is detailed below:
A week ago the CEL came on in my wifes S80. There are no noticable performance problems, excessive fuel use or any other drivability problems. The car has roughly 88,000 miles. We finally took it to our mechanic yesterday to pull the codes. Although I do not have the trouble codes (I can probably get them), the mechanic told me there are two codes. The first is an o2 sensor failure and the second is a turbo failure. Oddly, the mechanic could not give me specifics. He told me the o2 sensors would need to be replaced (2, correct?) and that the turbo would need to be replaced (there are 2 turbos also, correct?). He did mention in regards to the turbo that it is most likely not making enough boost. He checked the intercooler connections, up-pipe/downpipe connections and all other possible sources of a boost leak.
We cannot justify the $4000 plus/minus for repairs to the turbo/o2 sensors. Does anyone else think I should get a second opinion? He cleared the codes, but the CEL is still illuminated.
I'm really frustrated that we now have a car, which is not paid off that will suffer a catastrophic failure. I'm at a loss. I'm handy with tools, but don't think I could pull off a turbo change myself. Anyone else agree that it could just be a bad sensor??

Get a second opinion from an independent Volvo knowledgeable mechanic. It is rare for turbo's to go bad, especially at your miles. Btw, a MAF that is going bad will give both 02 and turbo codes.

I was thinking MAF.
The way the car runs, it just cannot be a turbo issue. It runs awesome!!!! Assuming a couple of things like, the MAF is between the filter and the intake and assuming I can get the part at Napa....how hard would it be to change?
Would a dealer be able to read the code more accurately?

Before you start spending some bucks (and no, you really need to get the specific Volvo part- on S/V70's it's made by Bosch for Volvo) try taking the MAF section right past your air box off and liberally spraying it with MAF cleaner that is readily available at most auto parts stores. Just don't touch the actual element/sensor...after it is sprayed really good, just let it air dry before putting it back in and cranking your engine. See if this does it....and post your results. To answer your question on the MAF, it's a 5 minute job with simple tools (either a torx or a screw driver). If you do end up needing one, look at pricing at www.fcpgroton.com and eeuroparts.com or Arizona Autohaus (don't know the exact URL). Eeuroparts has free shipping on orders of $40 or more. Knowing the exact codes you got would help immensely in further pointing this down. If you don't want to pay the bucks to have this done, most AutoZone or PepBoys will read your codes for free. Oh, another btw- your car does have twin turbo's. They are not very large. Even if your mechanic is right and you need a new one, they can be gotten either used or rebuilt for very little cost compared to the dealer. The way your turbo works (I looked this up once), one turbo feeds cylinders 1-3 and the other feeds cylinders 4-6. Hope this info is helpful.

just a guess, shot in the dark,
but with a car with that miles, i would change the turbo hoses (4mm internal diameter) from the turbo etc as these are the most likely things to go. its cheap enough to buy and fit yourself.
