Don’t rush a new to you car out on a deadline, especially if it’s going to school some distance away. I’m a veteran of > 54 college semesters of VolvoGirls and learned quickly to get cars sorted at home , not 2000 miles away

A fuel pressure tester is $25 on Amazon (ABN) and tells you definitely about your fuel pump, gas tank, lines, fuel filter, wiring, relay , and hoses in 5 minutes. The fuel pump relay you probably don’t need , costs twice that. Four times that of one buys the KAE which will probably have to go back for an OE one….ugh.

A NA at 120k miles has about 2/3 of her life in front of her, especially a 1998

I might be mobile mechanicinh up in western CT soon, in August if there’s time before school

Sounds like you are getting on the right track with this, I am glad you found your way to this site.

The randomness of your symptoms makes me think it's not ignition related. Or do you feel that this happens more in very humid weather? Just asking because we had a lot of that in CT lately. Also, would you be able to read codes? I am wondering if the MAF is on it's way out, not impossible at this mileage.

+1 on this. I need less stress and not having a turbo works well. Although I am considering a 2.3 to pair with my m56. Might be 6mo or so. I can remember one blooper I had with the intercooler hose. At the time (sometime 2019), I could not figure out what the hose was for, but there was a hose clamp missing. WHY would the engine loser power every (like 6x) time it blew apart?! Then I figured it out.

He's staying home. He's going to school locally around 30min drive for work and school. He's been using my wife's car and just dropping her off and going to work but since he is going to go to school now his work/school conflicts with my wife's work so that's why we're trying to get him in a car that will get home from a to b. I did speak with a mechanic and told him what is going on as well and they mentioned that it seems to be the fuel pump as well. He advice to get the pump, wires, plugs and ignition coil just to be safe. I trust this mechanic since it's my uncle lol. I also had my coworkers dad who is volvo certified that it sounds like fuel pump. So I ordered all that and should be here tomorrow.

The thing is the check engine light is not on. Just the service, abs and Trac which we know most likely is the abs module or the wheel sensors which I'm not worried at this time. Would there still be codes if there is no check engine light?

I bought this car in June 2023 so I haven't had much time wirh it. I knew it had issues but I had a mechanic lined up that was gonna take care of it and said it sounded like something simple like cap and rotor and fuel relay. After I bought it, all of a sudden he wasn't available anymore so I was left to my own devices to work on this. The most I've ever worked on a car was with my father when I would un do this or that and hand him tools and point the flash light in the right direction after a few insults lol and he did the rest of the work. He's since passed and I don't have anyone to do the work so I'm doing it all myself. Wish he was here with me doing it since volvo was his wheelhouse.

So I feel like you will judge me on this lol but I used Standard Motor Products. I got both the cap and the rotor from them. I found them on Amazon and it had 5 stars and a few of the comments were in reference to 98 v70 and 98 s70. So I thought if it worked for them, I don't see why it wouldn't work for me. I also thought get low to Mid grade parts to see if that's the issue and if I have to replace them in a year at least I'm not dishing out $100 for hi end parts that might still not fix the issue.
I bought the standard motor products distributor on Rockauto because it showed it was a Bosch in the picture, it comes in a "Standard Motor Products" box, but it says Bosch on it. It was $45 vs the $80+ for a Bosch elsewhere.

There are two versions listed under that brand though on Rockauto, the more expensive one is the one that claims to be a Bosch.

Would you say a 120k mile 1998 has more or less life than a 1999 or 1997 all other things being equal?

There can be latent codes which won’t trigger the light, but no codes probably means no misfires

Mechanics often suck at diagnosis. Nothing ‘ sounds like” a single component failure, in a given sub system there are 5-6 points of failure. The “ gurus” don’t have superpower skills, they just understand you start at the top of the tree and work down.

Example
You don’t diagnose a fuel pump or relay by an engine stuttering. You go to the fuel rail and measure the 40 psi Volvo says needs to be there. You can buy a tester or got onAutozone and borrow theirs, or rent and return.
