2004 S60 2.4

Post by superiga »

I own a 2004 S60 2.4L that I have put 7,000 miles on since I bought it a few months ago. Ever since I bought it, the temp gauge never reaches halfway like it should, but instead stops right in the middle between halfway and cold. I have driven it for hours in 105 degrees Fahrenheit weather and 30 degree weather and it never deviates from this point. I can watch it rise when I first start the car and it takes about 5 minutes before it stops there. There is plenty of heat when I turn it up all the way and there have also been no signs of overheating. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? It’s worth noting that the instrument cluster I have also does not fully display the odometer and outside temperature most of the time and is illegible, only occasionally can it fully be read. Also, when I fill the tank all the way it does not go all the way to full but instead one dash below it. Could this simply be the cluster or something else? Thanks!

If I were in your shoes I would start off by sending the DIM (cluster) off to Xemodex to have it repaired. Finding a compatible unit from another car “might” work but it is doubtful as they are electronically keyed in a way that you have to be able to match the code numbers between car and DIM. Simply matching the part number won’t guarantee compatibility.
As a precaution, disconnect the battery before you remove the DIM. And certainly don’t start the car while the DIM is removed or it will trigger an SRS warning light that only a dealer or well equipped repair shop can turn off. I learned that one the hard way.

Check the actual temp on a hose:

Then DIM, thermostat, temp sensor or all of the above.
