Do you have the same set up/sensor as I posted on page #9 of this thread ? That sensor, or lack of in my case, caused an intermittent ABS light for me. I would think that you have a similar sensor somewhere on yours.

hi yes but being the early 94 its got a brake position sensor on the servo i removed it and cleaned and connected the ohm meter and when you push the plunger the ohm reading rose and fell from 1ohm to 8ohm so im guessing this means its working?though nowhere can i find specs for it and its nla from dealers in uk and £160 from skandix,i have it booked for mot tomorrow and if it fails on the abs light i will have to pay them to fix it,first thing ever i have to pay because i cannot fathom for the life of me!
it has been a great pleasure to work on all the nuts and bolts stuff but the abs is a step too far for my aged brain and my skeleton hates it my neck feels like my head shall fall off after 10 minutes bent over the car!
got to pay also for the 4 wheel alignment having changed the axle bushes and it has been costly not fixing abs my tina is quietly cross at the cost,bless her.fingers crossed,cheers

hi all well thanks to a helpful chap on the uk volvo forum i found out im using the wrong dtc list i need to be using the 95-98 i did so and now the codes make sense! the brake light switch is one code and the brake position sensor is the other i think i mended the position sensor as the code is gone now it started to make some sort of sense.
and i am awaiting delivery of a new brake light switch and an oe used brake position sensor (though i think my repaired one is working as no code for that now) i also found the electrical part of the ignition switch though im not convinced there anything wrong with the original i think it has been replaced possibly in 2005 as theres some invoices for a drivers airbag and ignition barrel but cant hurt to have a spare.
as i had a little time to kill i took all the plastics i have undone and repaired and cleaned them as some heavy handed monkey had been at the dashboard for some reason and broke some of the screwholes clean off thanfully the bit of plastic where still there and some careful use of superglue means it should all screw back properly and get rid of some rattles and squeeks!
i just pray that the brake light switch finally gets the abs evil light out,interesting that it needs to be driven esp as it now has no mot,i hate being unable to use it esp as the cat and one of the dogs need the vet......peace

hi all well at long last i fixed the evil thing the abs light is out!new mot today so im a happy and somewhat less strssed volvo 850 owner,my neck is killing me now after sodding about upside down trying to fit the new brake light switch.
incidently i did an autopsy on the old brake light switch and found it is a 2 pole switch and has 4 contacts one of those 4 was missing if i had not broken the plastic in order to open it i maybe could have repaired it with a blob of solder where the contact was absent but as it is it now has a new genuine volvo switch and the original brake position sensor i repaired which is now working,skandix wanted £168:speechless-smiley-5 for it!im glad i can still solder well.
next up is getting the 4 wheel alignment but garage says it maybe to old and they have no settings for it,anyone know where one could find them? cheers all.

That is weird as I just had a 96 Volvo 850 aligned over here about a month ago. Maybe check one of the tire fitting stores. Biggest issue is likely rusted front nuts on the tie rods and rusted rear adjusters on the 2 rear axles.

hi neil i have to drop it off on wednesday and see if they can do it the rears easy as its all new the front is anyones guess and if one side is siezed id bet its the right hand i have no idea why but all the hardest to undo bolts have been on the right side,about 4 days of my life have so far been spent in the struggle with rusty nuts and bolts!
just glad to have it working and legal again im hoping alignment goes well then i can afford the 2 front tyres it needs,,,,, cheers

At least you are legal again (well the car anyways!) in the UK, so that is a huge step forward, and well done getting the ABS devil evicted!
Bad news, is you are now designated the ABS 'expert' for the early 850's..............

hi neil its a great relief exorcising the beast!i was staring to think it had beaten me i have never yet had to take any car to a garage other than mots and alignment,this time i managed to fix it myself even though it has been expensive i have also learned some useful lessons,i do wish i had learned of the obd earlier! i did put the original abs module back on and read the codes all 9 of them and using the correct fault codes they tie in mostly with the things i found along the way the abs pump was def faulty it has burned out or broken windings on the motor so would never have worked properly,there was code for the brake position sensor and brake light switch along with osf sensor fault which i picked up on with the ohm meter also the abs relay again picked up using the ohm meter,my theory is the abs pump sent a feedback or short through the system which took out one half of the abs relay.
this only happened because someone fitted a much larger fuse and by the time it blew it had toasted components,was not me and i suspect was an attempt to stop the fuse from keep blowing bloody cowboys.
question are there any good makes for a replacement front brake calipers? the os is a bit sticky and has the normal broken rubber cover and somewhat rusty piston,cheers

There may be better reconditioned calipers but unfortunately I don't know the UK suppliers to advise. It is maybe worthwhile finding a working or re-buildable pair and sending them to Bigg Red and having them rebuild them. They used to have and I believe still have a good reputation for excellent work. Problem is, usually that means it costs.

I just looked at their website and expensive at 150-215 pounds for a pair, but the higher price is for plated calipers and the rebuild. As I paid close to that for a pair of reasonable rebuilds from NAPA here (which included the brackets) that is not too bad. I have a working used pair of rears for my one year only vented rear brakes on my 2000 R which have been NLA for about 7+ years even in re-built form. The killer for me is the shipping to the UK and back. They may have to wait for me or someone I know visiting the UK and hand carrying them over and back!

And yes, I hate it when silly beggers do stupid stuff and you are left holding the baby!

i found rocking horse pooh!
hi all well after a good couple of years of hunting i have found and purchased a good clean non baggy headliner/headlining for the 855 out of a 1998 v70 i got to take it out myself and between downpours i somehow managed to get it home in one piece and still dry!
today i investigated the water ingress causing the damage to the headliner before i fit it and was chuffed to find all 6 roof bar securing bolts came undone without breaking/rounding off and as suspected it seems the seals have rotted away and due to prolonged exposure the water is making its way in through the screw threads and inside the car i have some black seal material and will make the seals and ensure there is no water ingress before fitting the replacement liner,i pray it fits but got to be worth a punt for £65 aye?
