P80 98-00 wiper motor assembly service - D'oh moment!

Post by scot850 »

Ok, so I pulled a spare wiper motor assembly as I like to have items available like that. Anyway, from experience I like to strip the arms out of the assembly and clean and grease all the ball joints and the spindles. Normally I have no issue, but this time I managed to remove my alignment marks for the arms.

I read Pelican Parts how-to on replacing the motor assembly, they make no mention of needing to keep the arms aligned in any position, nor any torque value for the main nut for the arms to motor nut.

The write up seems to infer that all you do is connect it up to the harness and switch the ignition on/off and the motor will park itself. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

I pulled one from a junkyard for my wagon once because I broke the stud. It was in the down position.

When I put it on my car, all I really needed to do is move my wiper arms around so they lay in the correct position.

The question is, does the motor reset itself to a park position when the ignition is switched on. I made the mistake of not etching the position on the short center arm to remove the arms to allow then to be removed , cleaned and re-greased. I wiped the marks of when cleaning the unit up in error so was not sure exactly where the arm refitted. If it is in the wrong position will it figure that out or can it get damaged trying to zero it's position?

You have to be careful putting these back together indexed, but you can test drive it before you install it. Plug it in, run it, then turn the wiper switch , not the ignition, to park it.

Don’t you guys use the ignition off, wiper on trick to park your wipers up and down for an ice storm?

I have to admit I am clueless on the ice storm parking procedure. I simply walk around the vehicle lifting the wipers off the windows for the event, however I’m interested in learning.

Um, no. We have a wonderful invention up here called a garage, and it is also heated!

I have done the ignition on, wipe and switch the ignition off mid-wipe to stop the arms.

I think this might be another wiring harness I will pick up on my next junkyard trip. I can then power it with my remote power supply and see what happens!

I should add that the headlight wipers will zero their position when you turn the key to POSII if they did not switch off in their home position. I did know the windshield wipers did as well.
