K&N Universal Air Filter Kit

Post by GT8888 »

Has anyone installed a K&N air system that replaced the air intake box. K&N does not make a kit for Volvo, but I guess one could use a K&N universal kit and adapt that and remove the air intake box, although K&N does not recommend it but will supply a universal kit if you give them the dimension of your air intake pipe.

I seem to recall seeing a pic of someone having installed a K&N air filter kit that replaced the air intake box.

Thanks guys
:?:  :?:

Is there something wrong with the stock airbox to begin with? I hope you have a spare air mass meter because the oil in the K&N will kill it. A quick Google search will reveal what I'm talking about. There is absolutely zero evidence to suggest that a stock airbox and stock MANN filter are in any way restrictive. The stock airbox volume has been tuned to deliver more torque at a specific RPM. When you eliminate the airbox you lose midrange torque.

Not necessarily true on a Volvo...I've been using a drop-in K&N air filter for years with no ill effects. The trick is to not over-oil it and to only oil the under side of the filter when you replace the oil.

Sorry, should have mentioned this - the main reason for trying to replace the airbox was to gain some space as I want to install some control gadget and am looking for space.

What kind of gadgets? Curious minds want to know.
To be honest, unless you go with a smaller battery or turn it, you really won't add any real space. I believe the negatives will outweigh the positives if you just put some type of cone filter (K&N or not) in there. You'll be sucking in hot air too. To do this right, you really need to block off your air filter in some manner for a short intake, or go with a cold intake- once again, very hard to achieve space gains. Knowing what you're wanting to install would help- maybe we can advise a different approach.

I am installing an electrolyzer to operate my vehicle hysro assisted. As you know space is pretty tight in the 850 GLT. I remember seeing a picture of someone installing a cone K&N Universal Kit and I believe it will be cold intake. K&N will custom a universal kit if they are given the dimension of the air pipes, BUT DOES NOT RECOMMEND IT, they do this just to protect their ass - just in case.

Thanks "Made in Japan"

Ah yes...was thinking about a hydrogen generator in one of my cars too (been reading a lot about them) but probably not my turbo cars. From what I understand, you really want the water to stay as cool as possible so there's another issue here. Really, up under the hood might not be ideal for this. 850 right? Thinking outside the box, a line into the engine bay from the passenger's side and the "tank" sitting up past the feet of a passenger in the cabin might be a better bet....there are ways to get past the firewall there. To be honest, you're really best keeping Volvo's own airbox set-up. Let me know what you come up with. Also, if you succeed with your plans, we would love to see a write-up with pictures here!
