Battery Charging at 18 Volts

Post by Alexjordan22 »

I noticed my battery was hot while running so I put my multimeter on it and sure enough it's showing 18+ Volts while running. Am I able to just replace the voltage regulator since I know the alternator is working? 1994 850 NA

The regulators are replaceable. They're just kind of a bear to replace while the alternator is on the car.

Getting the radiator cooling fan assembly out of the way will give you more working room.

Make the alternator repair soon, or the high voltage will ruin the battery and maybe other electrical devices including bulbs.

Double ditto; Robert replaced one on his ride not long ago without taking it off, but:
1) he is a Magician, and 2) he has pulled dozens from cars in salvage yards, and you know what they say about practice.
He is also big on doing the mod t hat puts the fan inside the shroud. Makes life a lot easier, even on the N/A cars.

Yeah, I've tucked the fans on both of our cars. Makes a big difference in room on the front of the engine bay.
Removing the fan shroud isn't all that much work, though.
